“Unique homestay experience; great hosts; beautiful views”
Reviewed July 17, 2013

This place may be unbeatable for anyone looking to melt into the local culture, offering a great balance between immersion and privacy. Hosts John and Annette are very hospitable, worldly and knowledgeable. Each evening we were invited to join them over a glass of wine to explore our curiosity and share the events of our day and our previous experiences. They helped us decide what sights to see and how to best arrange our plans. John even took us on a nature walk up the hill behind the property.

The home itself is very unique and interesting. It actually sits in Eastbourne, directly across the harbor (45 minute ferry ride) from Wellington. Guests are housed in the Crowsnest Suite on the top floor. Large picture windows overlook the harbor and provide awesome views of the city at night. This meant that we had the chance to do the touristy things by day, but could retreat to our romantic little hideaway at night. The entire home has been recently remodeled. The finishes are excellent and green: plenty of space, modern bath facilities, big closet, use of an I pad. We were there for only two nights and, regrettably, were able to enjoy only one breakfast. The food was great. We had a really early departure our last day, but our hosts insisted upon getting up with us to stuff us with toast (from freshly made bread, of course) and coffee!

We were within easy walking distance to the ferry dock, galleries and restaurants. Once we parked our car in their private space, we stashed the keys in our room until departure day. It was great fun to eat (and watch rugby) with the locals, have a few draft beers and stroll along the water back to our place. The ferry to Wellington became part of the adventure, too.

My wife and I are middle aged Americans who really enjoy getting to know locals and staying in places that feel authentic. This was the midpoint of a 9 day tour of New Zealand. In all we stayed at 7 properties. Days Bay Homestay was far and away the best! I want to go back.

Room Tip: There is only one room. But the bathroom fan is designed to remove ALL moisture and runs 45 minutes...

Thanks you for taking the time to write such a lovely review. We thoroughly enjoy having visitors from anywhere in the world, including New Zealand.
We enjoy visitors and you encourage us to take time out and "enjoy the moment".
Our Friday night friends also love the opportunity to chat with visitors who are always welcome to join us.
You may be interested to know that the earthquakes last week, which were 70km away from Wellington, were very hard to notice in the house due to the construction and location. Wood on Steel on solid rock. We only noticed the worst one, and that was just some slopping around while we were in the spa pool - we just enjoyed the ride - weeeell LOL

You may come back :-) I cannot promise an earthquake though, they are too rare, last one like that was 1992.

Our goal for a weekend away was to have more romance [with no kids] but minimal travel time and this location/homestay exceeded our expectations. Just 30 minutes from Wellington, yet the picturesque setting on the waters edge felt like we were far far away. We loved how we could walk one way and have the choice of two delicious restaurants and then walk the other and have a choice of a number of gorgeous bush walks plus local cafes and nick nack shops to peruse among. The icing on the cake was the quality of the service as well as the decor - it really did feel like we were in a 7-star resort! Annette and John are truely superb hosts!

Very pleased you enjoyed yourselves. We enjoyed your visit, it was great to chat about our lovely city with locals. BTW, we have replaced a pillow with a slimmer one on your suggestion to provide more choice, next time you return you should have a great sleep.

We stayed at Days Bay Homestay for two days last weekend to take a trip down memory lane for my husband who spent some of his childhood just down the road. We loved Days Bay - the room had the most spectacular views, it was clean and comfortable and John made us so welcome. Breakfasts were great - with lovely home made bread and local produce - just what was needed - and John's recommendations for evening eating were spot on, Easy to visit Wellington on the local ferry which was a great way to get into the city and lovely to come back to the calm of Days and Eastbourne bays in the evening. We are planning another visit already and look forward to meeting Annette then - unless of course we can persuade you to visit us in Devon first and return some of that amazing hospitality! We might have a spa pool by then.

Room Tip: Only one room but it is spectacular!

Thank you Penny. I especially enjoyed your visit because Kit got me into the water & I love snorkelling in the waters in front of the house - I have a favourite spot ;-)
Next time you visit I am sure Annette could not be called away at the last minute a second time so I am sure you will meet her. As for us visiting, well we are still trying to plan and find time and resources to decide on where our holiday will be this year - tis a very long process this time LOL However, we also plan to travel to your part of the world next year so don't be too surprised if we turn up.
I enjoyed your stay and do hope you will return soon, we have so many more places to take you, eg, this weekend we visited the Rimutaka rail trail on our bikes and it was lovely.

We stayed with Annette and John for a long weekend holiday and loved every minute of it! Their breakfasts were delicious, especially the fresh bread! We also loved watching movies on the iPad! Annette and John were so helpful without being too "in the way". Would highly recommend!

We stayed for three nights in John and Annettes lovely B&B. The location is fantastic, just a half hour ferry ride to the city, but a world away from the buzz of the city in a lovely area of Wellington. The hosts are delightful and add to the whole experience. Wake up to the smell of delicious home made fresh bread each day. The view from the guest suite is great - a constantly changing marine scene - very special.

Thank you, it is lovely to have people visit for their holiday as you did. It is especially good to have Auckland guests, most often our NZ Holiday guests come from Wellington. We look forward to your return - next time you manage time out :-)
BTW, You must have talked nicely to the Frangipani, it has since flowered profusely.

When making our travel plans (starting on the north island, then ferrying to the south and later back to the north island again) we looked for a great place to stay in Wellington, and we could not have found any better!
When we arrived late in the evening (there was just too much to see on the way to Wellington) we first got a hint from John to quickly drive about a mile back - Orcas swimming in the bay, close to the beach. Quite a special welcome (and awesome photo opportunity). When getting back to the B&B half an hour later we were greeted with a glass of wine and had some nice talks, a welcome to remember.
We could write lots about the wonderful breakfast, but just look at the praise in other reviews, we totally agree with those.
John and Annette provided us with great tips for dinner and a roadmap to Weta, so we did not have to worry about anything.
The frangipani blossoms accompanied us for quite a few days after both stays, wish we had such a wonderful plant here at home.
And thanks again for lending us the IPAD, it really helped in planning some additional stuff, and guess what: Now we own our own one (and the phone as well).

Room Tip: The Crows Nest Suite is just awesome.

Thank you for your lovely comments - I was equally excited to see the Orca and even more so for you to see them. My surprise included seeing you wave to me walking by below following the Orca as they swam past our front deck while I was taking my photos from the Crowsnest! We try to encourage the Orca to swim past for every guest, but unfortunately they came to Days Bay last week a couple of days before the next guest.

The Frangipani in the Crowsnest managed to bloom all winter and is now sprouting and sending out blooms from last years racemes - wonderful.

Days Bay Homestay is the best B and B experience I have ever had. John and Annette were open, welcoming and easily became new friends. The location was perfect for me. I had a large conference in Wellington, and loved the 20 minute ferry in the morning to gather my "conference self" and the ride back on the ferry to chill. Once back in Eastbourne, it was like coming home. That might sound odd, but it was very real. John and Annette always offered tea or a glass of wine (depending on when I came 'home') and I felt very comfortable either joining them, or going up to the Crows Nest and enjoying my fantastic view of the bay. John showed me penguins, I got to watch blustering wind whip across the bay, and the full moon shining on me in bed. I loved the bikes and hikes. I love riding out to the light house, and stopping at the pub on the way back to Days Bay. The building is beautifully designed, the room perfectly appointed and the hosts are new lifelong friends.

Room Tip: The Crows Nest is the best. Watch the seagulls, the moon, the sun and enjoy either solitude, or if...
