A real Wellington favorite - great atmosphere, charming staff, good food and an interesting wine list. Love.

“Did not meet expectations.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 25, 2013

It was not a busy night when eating there recently. An indication should have been that other recommended restaurants were all busy. Service was good however the tapas dishes were not up to the expected standard. The restaurant is not inexpensive and I do not begrudge the cost when the food meets expectations and the experience is good. In this instance I left feeling let down. Maybe the chef was having an off night or maybe the reason it was not busy is because it is not as good as the competition.

“Eclectic food and surroundings”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 26, 2013

I have recently been to Wellington twice and on each trip went to Duke of Carvells for breakfast or dinner Both times the menu had a varied choice of delicious meal options. Service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Every meal I have had has been delicious and perfectly cooked..

“Cool wee spot”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2013

This place has great food, an interesting wine list and informed friendly staff.
Order a few plates to get a good selection of the food. They source local ingredients as well as using quality cheeses from overseas. It can get really busy but the staff will try hard to find a spot for you. There is a carpark right beside the restaurant, which makes it easy if you're driving.
They have an outside area for smokers which has a door separating it from the inside restaurant. You can eat out there too. I'm not a smoker but if you are that may be useful.
Great place, go :-)

“Duke Carvell's Ouzo surprise”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 16, 2013

A restaurant on the street level, just off Cuba Street near convenient car parking thsi venue has dark ambience. It also has comfortable seating, strong girders holding it earthquake safe, chandeliers and prints of old masters as well as one of Queen Victoria. So one is seated and very promptly a waiter/waitress is at the table with notes on how the shared platters /tapas could work and updates on what's off menu, but available. Wine service was not at the table so that could be improved, it would be good to see one's wine poured. However the food (although small platters were just that) was expertly cooked attractively served and as I had been told about the cheese flambed in ouzo, of course I ordered same, with a side of spinach and mushrooms and chips. It was a very palatable grouping. A pear with cinnamon on flakey pastry was a somewhat less satisfying dish and a very small dessert. Maybe two pears! Prices were on a par wiht in-house dining at 4 star hotels in the area, so that was all right.
