Those who read my reviews of Indian restaurants outside India and London are familiar with what I think of them. They are a black mark on the rich Indian cuisine and have nothing to do with Indian cuisine. They are fake, generic, and cannot think beyond chicken tikka and bad service.

Great India is one of the few exceptions. It is perhaps because it is owned and managed by Rakesh who is a Gujarati, and not one of those North Indians who have no clue about creativity and service. There was an item under starters called Aloo Set. I had never heard of this item, and asked Rakesh. he explained it is a relatively unknown dish outside of Gujarati households. We ordered it, and it was delicious. Next, the veg kofta was refreshingly devoid of heavy cream and cottage cheese. It was made of diced vegetables the way it is made in Indian homes. We knew right away we were in the right place. However to be fair, the naan and the rotis were limp. But nonetheless, the dishes were so good, we did not mind the limp breads.

One of my pet peeves against Indian restaurants is that they cannot get a simple cuppa of Indian masala chai right. Unfortunately the same is true here. And no wonder, because Rakesh admitted that the tea is brewed at 5pm for the entire evening, and then kept all evening and night waiting to be served. I guess even Rakesh has no clue about a good cup of fresh, piping hot Indian tea!

Lastly, a bit of sneakiness crept through that was not appreciated. We were hardly seated, and Rakesh offered papads and chutneys for the table saying that is the standard procedure. Since most Indian restaurants offer this in the beginning, we nodded our heads. When we got the bill, we were shocked to see almost 10 dollars charged for this! This was definitely sneaky!

None of the curry nonsense here. This is a real Indian restaurant in spite of a couple of flaws, most probably the best in Wellington. The service all round was warm, inviting and informative, which cannot be said of most Indian restaurants.

We dropped in on Friday night around 8 and were able to get a table straight away. We had two dishes (one meat, one vegetarian) a rice and a roti. This was more than enough for the two of us to share, but we persevered and managed to eat the lot!!
Staff were great, service was prompt and attentive.

For three decades this special place has stood out for our family as centre of excellence to celebrate in quietly and respectfully. From the very welcome to our parting we felt at home yet special. The warm yet distinctly civil correctness of our host Rakesh prompted me to come here more frequently to one of Wellington's finest dining establishments. I have eaten in Indian restaurants round the world - this one ranks highly. Rakesh and his staff gave us the insight and confidence to experience new dishes. I am was guided to the north east India Venison Masala with its lush green herbs, chives and coriander, finished in coconut cream. Together with the Peshawari Naan stuffed with dried fruits and nuts I enjoyed the best Indian dish of my life.

Great Indian restaurant in the heart of the city. Nice staff and a butterchicken and naan bread to die for.
