we had a wonderful tour of Weta caves in wellington , New Zealand.
It was intersting to have a peak into the making of LOTR and the Hobbitt as well as see some movie locations around Wellington.
Out tour guide Kent was hilarious and was inthe movies.
I would recommend this tour if visiting Wellington New Zealand

If you're going to buy something at Weta Cave and that's it, then ok, don't do the tour. BUT! IF you are like me, you want to see the art behind the scenes of some great movie productions. We did the workshop tour and had a very knowledgeable guide, no camera/video allowed, you have to just keep it in your case. Lots of goodies you wouldn't normally see. We went at 11:30am I think they are every 30 min or so. A few scary masks/heads that very little ones wouldn't like much at the beginning. There is a fee, but I'm glad I went!

So the Cave itself is basically a shop/mini museum displaying some cool memorabilia from LOTR, Hobbit, King Kong, Avatar, Tin-Tin and Greg Broadmore's Dr Grordbort. If you're a Sci-Fan it's worth spending half an hour or so browsing. I'd recommend paying the $20 to enter to Weta Workshop and see where it all goes down. How they make the prosthetics in LOTR to the weapons in District 9, with some cool surprises along the way. Get to meet some of the technicians and sculptors who spend nearly a hour chatting to visitors.

This is a great place to visit if you're into movies and want to see how the props and masks are made.

The tours are conducted by the people who work for Weta. Our tour guide was one of the painters whose job it is to make all the props look old and worn. We saw how the weapons for District 9 were made, and the suits of armour for Sauron. The chain mail was cool too because you get a chance to see the difference in weight between the real thing and the costumes.

There is a great display of costumes and swords from the Lord of the Rings.
We had a chance to see the blacksmith at work in the workshop.
We also got a chance to speak to one of the artists for about 15mins who told us all about the projects he was working on and what it was like to work there.

It was really great to see how the props and costumes come together for the movie.

Very reasonable for the price!
Try to go on the last tour of the day. There is less people and you get a chance to stay a bit longer.

I was traveling through Wellington and as an avid LOTR fan wanted to at least drop by the Weta Cave to pay my respects. I found the little shop to be filled with all kinds of great props, not just from the LOTR and Hobbit films, but a host of other Weta projects (Avatar, Tin Tin, Dr. Grordbort, etc.). The merchandise was of high quality though a bit on the spendy side, but I expected that and consider some of the pieces actual works of art, and art isn't cheap. (note for Weta, please make more prints available, I would love to purchase original works but did not see many at the shop or online, especially of the Dr. Grordbort series!!) All that aside, the fun didn't really start until the Window into the Workshop tour. This was well worth the NZ$20 and was much more then access to different props. An actual Weta Tech walks you through the whole creative process and does it well (though the no photo policy is a bitter bitter pill to swallow). My guide's name was Matt (from South Africa) and he absolutely killed it. There were so many amazing pieces in that shop, from original art, to weapons, armor, and sculptures; stuff so good it will melt your face. I have such respect for the talent behind Weta and Matt did an amazing job providing insight and answering questions. Its not just a stop for LOTR fans, with the Window into the Workshop tour, it becomes a museum of the Weta creative mind and what they do is world class (Last note to Weta, please do something with all that amazing steam punk content; pure gold).
