Owner description: The Weta Cave is your gateway to two incredible film-making experiences in Wellington, New Zealand. From Lord of the Rings to Avatar: our Weta Cave Workshop Tour reveals how me make the props, costumes, creatures and models from your favourite films. Catch a glimpse of artists at work on our tour stage and peek through windows that look directly into the workshop itself! Ever wanted to visit a real shooting stage? Blast off on our Miniatures Stage Tour to see the unbelievable Weta Workshop models and miniatures built for the popular TV series, Thunderbirds Are Go! A cavern of creativity, the Weta Cave shop also boasts collectibles designed by the artists at Weta Workshop, prop replicas, apparel, jewellery, books and more. While you’re here, take a seat for a free film about the history of film-making on the Miramar Peninsula. It screens throughout the day.

This is a must see. It is so interesting and the things that these guys can do for movie props and special effects is amazing. For 20 dollars it is great value for money. Out guide Matt was brilliant..
Highly recommend .

Al though quite small, it was packed with memorabilia from the many projects Weta studios has undertakn, particulalrly the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy and The Hobbit. The studio offers a 30 minute video of it's work and also a very good guided tour of the design section. t-shirts, caps etc rather expensive, but clearly aimed at overseas tourists rather then visiting kiwis!!

Make sure you watch their movie. It is worth the extra time. If you take the Lord of the Rings tour, you do not have time to go to the new part they have opened up. So it might be someplace to go outside of a tour. Though, I bet the tours change soon to include all the options.

Hi Michelle0417

Hope you had a great time on your 'Lord of the Rings Tours' - and I hope you get a chance to come back to visit the 'Window into Workshop' space.

Hopefully the tour operators will be able to start including this in their visits to our place - but as its all so new, this is all still being organised and refined.

I recently visited weta cave with an overseas visitor staying with me in Wellington. I felt proud of this wonderful and interesting local attraction. Even if you're not really into Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit etc it showcases the enormous talent and passion of those who work here. The behind the scenes tour cost $20 and was good value for money. There is also a free film but our timing wasn't right so I'lll have to see it next time. I will definitely take future visitors to this Wellington gem.
