Owner description: The Weta Cave is your gateway to two incredible film-making experiences in Wellington, New Zealand. From Lord of the Rings to Avatar: our Weta Cave Workshop Tour reveals how me make the props, costumes, creatures and models from your favourite films. Catch a glimpse of artists at work on our tour stage and peek through windows that look directly into the workshop itself! Ever wanted to visit a real shooting stage? Blast off on our Miniatures Stage Tour to see the unbelievable Weta Workshop models and miniatures built for the popular TV series, Thunderbirds Are Go! A cavern of creativity, the Weta Cave shop also boasts collectibles designed by the artists at Weta Workshop, prop replicas, apparel, jewellery, books and more. While you’re here, take a seat for a free film about the history of film-making on the Miramar Peninsula. It screens throughout the day.

Great to go and look at their shop and take photos with characters such as gollum and others in the lord of the rings and can purchase gifts. They also have a tour which we did not go on, but if we had more time we definitely would have gone on the tour

Hi Iangim

Sad to hear you didn't manage to get the time to go on our Window into Workshop tour.

Hopefully you can take advantage of the cheap flights Airnz offer to come down and do it sometime.

Cheers

This is a must do for everyone! It is quite small on the outside, however there is a lot to do on the inside. We did a special tour of some of the LOTR props, district 9, avatar etc. This was extremely insightful as to how they make the props and clothes that we see in films. I loved seeing everything here and wished I spent a bit more time.

I will admit I am not a LOTR fan but my son is so went along to the cave for him. I didn't realise you could do tours of behind the scenes in the workshop but decided to pay the money (again, to keep my son happy). Well, I thoroughly enjoyed it and found the personal experiences of our tour guide, the work Weta has done and the props on display fascinating. Its not often I find something that both my teenage children enjoy as they have very different interests, but all three of us walked out saying how much we had enjoyed it. I have never written a review before but felt compelled to share this experience.

The Weta Cave is far too small to accommodate the number of visitors. However, it was great to see the workshop and work that had been carried out (especially for LOTR's and Hobbit). Would return but not on a school holiday!

Go early in the morning if you must go during the school holidays. The shop won't be so crowded then. At the Weta Cave, you can view (and purchase some too!) models and collectibles from not just the LOTR and Hobbit movies, but also some other movies they've worked on or created, e.g. Tintin. There's a short video you can view about the origins of Weta and how far they've come along. For $20, you can also take the 'Window into the Workshop' tour where the guide will explain the prop-making process .
