Attended the New Year's Eve dinner,$250.00 ahead.first few courses were nice.too much bread was offered and not up to their usual standards.staff were ok but not up to Timmothys standard who is usually on duty.the duck was chewy and the desert way to big and rich. Not sure if Laurent was working.what a debacle when we paid,we were charged for the wine match that we did not have and more .a mere sorry did not suffice.my friends and I frequent Hippo regularly for dinner and also drinks.i won't be going back and after attending two New Year's Eve at Hippo again I and my friends won't be back.logan Brown will get our business where are treated as real people and not just a business to make money.

Restaurants at this level should be judged against high standards. The Hippopotamus advertises itself thus, "experience exquisite French influenced cuisine in a glamorous environment that boasts breathtaking views. You will be left with the overwhelming desire to return for a repeat of this magnificent dining experience". So one expects the best and while it comes close, it doesn't reach the levels it sets for itself. One simple example, we had the five course degustation menu with matching wines. The art of a degustation menu should be to gently lead the diner to ever more exquisite taste sensations and gradually increase the level and intensity of the dining experience. However before we had had the first course we were offered at least two servings of bread rolls, followed by another two offerings after the first course. It was too much in my view.

That said the food provided was of a very high standard and the wines, mostly "old world" in style or origin matched well. I am more of a fan of "new world" wines, these wines made an attractive accompaniment to the various dishes. However none of the dishes really stood out for me, although the snails were warmly received by most of our group.

They catered well for one of guests who had special dietary requirements.

The value was at the very top-end of what you would expect to pay for such a menu. Slightly excessive in my view, but not outrageous.

Service was very good and all of the waiting staff appeared to be genuinely French, at least judging by their accents! They coped well with a fire alarm and subsequent evacuation just prior to the last course being served.

As I said above, restaurants at this level should be judged against the highest level and this restaurant falls short of this standards.

Service was a bit slow to begin with and a noisy group of professional men were quite annoying as we were looking forward to a quiet drink. We had pre dinner bottle of champagne and cocktails while waiting for a table, but were told after half an hour of waiting that the restaurant was fully booked. Nice views of the harbour.

At last a restaurant that equals the quality of service and food you would expect from a nice restaurant back home (France). I truly enjoyed the experience, all your senses have a feast. Hearing the language, seeing the beautiful surroundings, tasting the food and wine recommended by an expert. I highly recommend this restaurant and the hotel is a romantic place to stay at on a special occasion!
