“Nice little hotel”
Reviewed January 9, 2014 via mobile

This hotel is well placed right in the heart of the Tauranga down town area. Big wide footpaths with Many outdoor eating options.
The room was nice and clean, a good size not too small, with a 2 seater lounge on one side, and a nice desk where you could plug in to do some work.
The only slightly unusual aspect is that there is no kitchen, all food comes from nearby restaurants that have a charge back agreement with the hotel. I ordered a fish dish and by the time I received it it was Luke warm at best.
The bathroom is well appointed with a good shelf for your toiletries, and nice soaps etc.

Very well located, right in the heart of downtown Tauranga, walking distance to shops and restaurants. Great service, modern rooms, comfortable beds. A great choice and would return if our travels take us back to Tauranga.

Highly recommend this hotel. Room is quite spacious and quiet. Spa bath is lovely and was very surprised to find timber flooring in the bathroom. Quite unlike the cool tile floors in most hotel bathrooms. We had a King bed and my son had a proper single bed, not a sofa bed! Hotel is within walking distance to many nice eating places. The unlimited wifi is an added bonus. It was nice to get a welcome drink of our choice delivered to our room.

We highly recommend this hotel. Very luxurious rooms and wonderfully quiet even though a railway line right outside - very nicely situated amongst a busy city square. Hospitality was excellent, customer service excellent. Would stay again.

Room Tip: Loved the Harbour View rooms - very luxurious but also Level 6 family were very happy with their roo...

This hotel is probably the best in downtown Tauranga --- but that not saying much since about 25% of the shops in the downtown are boarded up and many of the remaining ones just "services", eg: banks, real estate offices, etc. There are no restaurants nearby, only cafes and diners. The whole area is depressing and looks crime prone. That is why you'll appreciate the hotel's secure indoor parking.

Nearby Mount Maunganui has more hotels and restaurants available.

The Hotel on Devonport itself (about 30 rooms only) is new and well furnished with polite staff.
The hotel served a very good in-room breakfast.

The hotel is part of an apartment complex.

Being small the hotel has no restaurant itself but has charge-back arrangements with the Tauranga Club, a business-persons club with a good view within the apartment complex.

HOWEVER! be wary of the Tauranga Club. They served me (for $7.50) what they claimed
to be Monteith's apple cider. I did not see it being poured from it's bottle so suspect the server
was trying to trick me. It had zero apple taste and was basically sweet fizzy water --- this confirmed by my wife also after she took a sip. When I protested the server (who also appeared to be the "in-charge" person) retorted that "It's New Zealand cider". Of course I should have expected that retort since so many New Zealanders are defensive about the country.

The food in the Tauranga Club on Friday evening 20 December 2013 was about average for a business persons club at the end of the business week.

The server refused to reduce the bill for the so-called cider even though I sent it back without drinking more than 2 swallows.

Therefore I paid the bill in cash (minus, of course, the $7.50 for the bogus "cider") and left in disgust.

I later reported my experience to the brewers of the cider who said they were glad to hear from
me and said they would investigate the "cider" batch. Also the PR prevalent at the Tauranga Club.

Room Tip: Go to Mount Maunganui, less than 10km away.

We stayed here for 2 nights from boxing day so we can have a look around the Mount and Tauranga area.

Location: they are smack bang in the middle of Tauranga shops and restaurants so very convenient.

Parking: free inside carpark in their secure building on level 3. Except on our 1st night we came back around 11pm to find there was no space to park on the allocated guests only carpark (the other levels are for apartment occupants) so had to buzz the manager to ask where we could park instead and she advised we could use one on other floor. Might be good to advise guests this during check in for future, although I noted some cars parked on hotel guests parking did not have their label displayed so unsure if they really should be parked there.

Check in: we arrived at 1.30 pm and asked if room was ready and front desk lady said that it wasn't and to come back at 2 which was the check in time. She stored our belongings with her in reception area. We came back just after 2 pm and was told room still not ready, asked how much longer and she said that she will check and them she found another room a floor below that was available so she moved us to this.

The room: we booked their deluxe room which was very spacious and had all that you could need for a comfortable stay. The bathroom was also roomy and had lots of towels and complimentary soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion. Probably one thing to note was although it had a "king" bed configuration it was really 2 singles pushed together so was a bit uncomfortable if you decide to sleep in the middle. Also, the pillows were on the soft side which caused a bit of discomfort for me whilst sleeping as I like firmer pillows - although this didn't bother my bf. There was also a mini bar which the prices were reasonable. The room had a small balcony but our view was of the carpark so nothing too exciting. The room was clean and tidy.

Overall it was a great and pleasant stay and would recommend for others to stay at should you wish to explore the Tauranga area.

We traveled to Tauranga on 27 December on a motorcycle and had made a booking at Hotel On Devonport as it was the last available place to stay that evening.

Arriving at the lobby we were warmly greeted by Emma who checked us in and explained how to access the free secure undercover carpark. We were also offered two complimentary beverages that would be delivered to our room soon after check in.

The room was superb, incredibly comfortable bed, wonderful bathroom and a great balcony to sit and look over the city.
