“Do not recomend Hotel Armitage”
Reviewed November 3, 2009

Rooms dated and dirty. Had to change rooms when first arrived as allocated room dirty and smelt bad. Woken every morning at 6 am by an alarm ringing in a nearby room, no soundproofing here. Swimming pool dirty. Cramped conference facilities and poor sound system. Staff absolutely wonderful, so wonderful they did not mind us changing hotels part way through our stay, and food was great.

The hotel had good sized comfortable rooms, with off street parking. The hotel location was picked as it was within an easy walk of the Tauranga CBD (500m) and we felt safe returning to the hotel later during the night. As we stayed on a Saturday night, some noise could be heard from some cars and people using the street when leaving the CBD. Overall very happy with the location which I would use again. Try requesting a room facing the rear car park.

The location of the hotel is excellent as it is very close to shops & restaurants in CBD. The receptionist is very helpful and friendly. However, the hotel is very tired. The owner/operator needs to refurbish the hotel immediately as there are a lot of choices within the area.

Myself and a group of friends wanted to have a girls weekend away. We looked for a Tauranga Hotel that would accommodate a group of seven all in one room. The Hotel Armitage could fit us all in their penthouse. It was very reasonably priced which was a good thing because the rooms and facilities were very old. Tatty bed spreads, towels and furniture. The balcony could only fit 3 of us at a time. The pool area is made to look very nice on their website, but in fact my home pool is much nicer.
I definitely wouldn't choose to stay there again, not when I have so much more choice these days.

After a run of bad hotels it was a pleasent surprise. We booked using one of those discount vouchers from the supermarket dockets. The hotel was very well priced for the location. We walked to the towncenter, which is always hard to get a carpark in, so it was very handy. We had an excellent meal in the restaurant upstairs, even though the hotel was catering to a large group of american children on a tour we were given personal attention, and our meals were excellent and served promptly. Best of all the location is quiet, has plenty of parking, and the room was comfortable, quiet, and staff very helpful. Yes is perhaps a bit dated, but I'd rather that and a good nights sleep and a quiet room, than a new modern place where I can hear every word of the neighbours above the TV. We will definetly be going back when we go to Tauranga next. :-)

  • Liked — It was quiet, comfortable, and centrally located
  • Disliked — perhaps a little dated, perfectly acceptable though

Hotel Armitage Tauranga, N.Z.
Best thing about the hotel is it’s location. Best thing about the room is the bath. Room is relatively spacious, but sofabed is a waste as seating, as it is old and uncomfortable. Table with three chairs, desk with cushioned seat, controls for all lights on one side of bed. TV with limited channels, clock radio with alarm, minibar, coffee and tea making (instant coffee only, tea bags, sugar, no sweetener, instant hot chocolate) Did not try restaurants. Small, limited gym facility, with aged treadmill, one bike, some weight equipment. Did not try gym. Location is good, easily accessible from main highway, walking distance to the waterfront area restaurants and shops.
Across the street from the Monmouth Redoubt, a military encampment from the settler/Maori wars of the 1840s. Tauranga is a moderate size (77K population) seaside town offering principally ocean oriented activities - beaches, swim with dolphin cruises, etc.

We took the Graeme Butler Swim with dolphins cruise which was a marvelous experience with a large dolphin pod, compatible other guests, and Graeme Butler, the captain, who is a genuine Kiwi character and a great dolphin finder. The sixty foot sailing yacht is getting a bit tired and could use some polish, but the equipment and seaworthiness are well maintained, although the bright work is a bit faded. Graeme is entertaining and informative and pretty much worth the price of admission on his own. The dolphins were an enchanting extra. We found a large pod with many juveniles learning how to swim and hunt. Although they were moving too fast for any interaction, some of our party did try the cold waters for a while, with no results in dolphin interaction or visible fish. Hanging on the swim bar was an exhilarating, if chilling, experience, in spite of the lack of marine life.

The hotel is showing its age, and the entrance area smelled strongly of smoke, although our room was non-smoking. The hotel could stand a thorough updating, but for the price and location, it was an acceptable stay.

The Armitage is in a very central location for the bar & restaurant quarter of Tauranga. The decor in the hotel is slightly dated but this does not detract from the cleanliness of the hotel or the friendliness of the staff.
