“Dessert is gastronomic orgasm”
Reviewed March 5, 2013

Summary: Was recommended to us as fantastic. Found dessert to be above expectations but rest of meal whilst not horrible by any means was a little disappointing for price and expectation. Having said that I would recommend and go back simply because the dessert was so fantastic.

Hubby and I had dinner there last night. Waiter with slight French accent was very professional and appeared like he actually cared about your dining experience from start to finish. Nice surprise so he got a good tip (not common for us kiwis).

Two entrees, a main which we shared and then we shared the tasting platter dessert meal cost just over $100 - no drinks

The atmosphere and decor is rather budget - not romantic rustic or anything. Actually quite yuk, not overly comfy or anything special. Would have expected better for upper price bracket.

Hubby had pork belly entree with apple slaw, a sauce and little cider 'balls'. It was nice, but nothing to drool all over - had better and had worse. Very expensive entree at around $24. I had sword seafood which was a skewer with a scallop, prawn, piece cray tail, piece salmon and piece white fish. Flambéed at table with lime vodka and horipito and two dipping sauces - mild sweet chilli and hollandaise. Very nice.

Main was fillet steak with mash, asparagus, ratatouille and beef cheek and prune and port sauce as well as ju. Nice, steak a little over cooked from what we ordered, and a bit too lean so lacked some flavour and juiciness. Fillet is lean, but this was super lean if you get what I mean. The cheek was nice, vege ok one over cooked the other under :-)

Why you wonder a five star rating? The dessert was OMG over the top yum.

$26 for tasting plate and plenty to share limoncelo tart, white choc and rasp. icecream with brandy caramel sauce, choc cherry cups, choc chili tart, creme brulee in a kiwifruit. And all of them perfect.

So service was wonderful - dessert the best I have had - truly and worth going there alone for. Yes I would go back mainly for dessert. The entree and mains weren't bad but for the price I have had better. Mains are around $40.

“Mount Bistro, please read your reviews!”
Reviewed February 16, 2013

We ate there as a group last week. We knew the food would be very good with generous portions but expensive. All the above was true, in particular there was good attention to a mix of interestingly prepared vegetables to accompany the beautifully cooked meat. Puddings were less special however. The Chef knew his art and produced very good fare. Several of our group were local and had eaten there previously. The location was great also. What really detracted from the evening was the slow and rather haphazard service from staff who really seemed to be out of their depth. We all waited for a long time for pre-dinner drinks. Even so, one of our party had to get up and go to the bar himself, as his order had been forgotten.. The waiting staff were actually willing and in their way quite helpful but seeped poorly trained. There was no evidence of a senior person taking charge in the front of house to make sure the evening ran smoothly. The wine list was good, but if you are contemplating buying wine at well over $100 a bottle, I would expect there was someone really knowledgable on hand to advise.
So, what's new in this review? Actually nothing, as these points have been noted before but it really soes illustrate that the Mount Bistro would do well to read their reviews and smarten up the front of house, and then they would have a really outstanding establishment.

“A forgettable experience .....”
Reviewed January 26, 2013

A rare date night for us ...and after asking all the locals ...The Bistro was recommended. We booked a table which secured us a nice position on the 'inside' balcony with Mt views - it is a lovely setting even if its all closed in.

Unfortunately everything else is pretty forgettable. The waitress (young and inexperienced) had zero personality, offered no smiles or usual table-side conversation. We were never asked how our meal was, never asked if we needed anything else (which we did ...twice) ...just left to our own devices ...which didnt bother us but not exactly hospitable. We had four oysters 'one each way' for starters and the pork belly ....the grilled oysters were practically shrivelled raisins by the time they hit the plate. The pork - a very generous portion - was a crackling addicts delight served with fresh apple! Very tasty. For mains, the soft shell crab and crab cakes were quite bland and the accompanying sauces added no ooomph. The lamb, gratin potatoes and accompanying sauce were very, very good.

Could have easily been persuaded (out of comfort) to have a dessert but we were never invited to order ....so we decided on an ice-cream cone and a beachfront walk. Very pleasant.

The reviews and awards suggest a more polished, hospitable experience from Mount Bistro ...and I suspect the Chef deserves that to give his food the platform it deserves.

“"Just as good as the 1st time"”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

This is my 2nd visit to Mount Bistro and have to say both visits have been fantastic. Different company this time and once again everyone present really did think that the food was amazing. Its always a hard choice as the menu has so many good choices, 2 of us had the Sauce-n-ray(?) seafood skewer - I wont spoil this for others but it really is spectatcular when it arrives at the table, others had steak - melt-in-your mouth was the comment and the dessert tasting plate for 2 was really good, certainly nothing left on anybodys plates all night - so take that as a good sign! Good choice of NZ and local wine as well. The service was slightly hit and miss but overall was just as impressed as the 1st time. Always a special night out. Thanks

“Great food - a pity about everything else.”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

The much acclaimed Mount Bistro has wonderful food, it's true. The oysters were incredible, the tarakihi, gorgeously fresh and hugely portioned. The dessert platter was varied, interesting and almost evaporated it was so enjoyed. Great NZ wine list also. However, the service and atmosphere was just pitiful. Our waiter forgot our orders twice (not sure if he was intoxicated) and was generally all over the place. After our main courses, he asked us about dessert and immediately suggested tequila, doing a bizarre little jig on the spot. It was almost funny - but not as funny as the idea that this was a fine dining experience. The atmosphere is oppressive and the decor severely dated. I feel bad for the chefs here - they are producing fantastic food, but it goes to waste with the current service and set up.
