We stayed here last week just for the night, and were both impressed with what we got for the price :) The room was clean, Bedding was comfortable and warm with extra pillows and blankets avalible! Bathroom was spacious with a gorgeous spa bath! Really enjoyed that after all the walking we did exploring Tauranga!
Very central to everything, all the bars, pubs and eating places are on the next block, and the shops are all around it! We didnt use the car at all!
Staff were very helpful and very friendly! Great all round thanks :)

Room Tip: I think most of the rooms are the same, but we always opt for the top floor.

We were recently passing through Tauranga and needed a place to overnight. The Harbour City served very well and in a crowded market, where not all places are equal, this motel presented many of the good things expected in a motor inn. We were due to arrive late and received a call from reception to check on our ETA. This was a nice touch but a little concerning in that we were told the reception office closed from 9 pm. Moreover, when we arrived we found that if we wanted a cooked breakfast the next morning we would have to order before 8 pm (a continental breakfast could be delivered to the room that night). For an establishment catering to the modern traveling public these time restrictions were a little disconcerting.

That said, the place is very well set up and centrally located, a stone's throw from the Tauranga waterfront and the hospitality "strip". It has plenty of off street parking in a central courtyard. The rooms are well equipped, very clean and comfortable, and the kitchenette had all required amenities, including a very tidy extractor built into the stainless steel bench-top to remove cooking odours. Basic tea/coffee/sugar/milk was provided, though not as generously as, or with the variety of, other establishments we have been in.

The bathroom was roomy with both spa bath and shower cubicle. It was well equipped with a strong fan to remove steam, a powerful hairdryer (so often these simply don't work), plenty of towels and complimentary bath products.

One very small irritation - there seems to be a trait amongst NZ motel operators to leave signs about telling guests not to do certain things. In this case the warning was not to use the spa bath after a time in the evening. This is clearly done in the interests of other guests but there are other less abrupt ways of achieving the same result.

A motel is seldom likely to be a "wow" experience but if you are looking for an above average place to lay you head of an evening, Harbour City Motor Inn will suit well.

We stayed here for 2 nights on our way south. Excellent location right in the middle of town. Everything is so close. They have bikes for rent (which worked out well for us to get around). The hosts were really nice and had lots of information about the area. Would definitely stay again.

Great location (opposite I-site). Received a really friendly welcome. Rooms were good and very clean. Had a ground floor room, which I agree with others lacks privacy, but would not let this put me of. Already planning our trip for 2014 and will stay again.

Room Tip: Ask for an upstairs room

We chose this hotel because of its central location and free parking. We got both. However, all of the rooms seem to face the parking lot, which I find very off-putting. So we were on the ground floor, with our windows facing parked cars and eye-level with passing hotel guests. There were no voile type curtains to let in light while offering some privacy... so we had to close the blinds and be in a dark room in the middle of the afternoon. This really bothered me. Other complaints are that we could hear actual conversations coming from the unit next door and the bed was way too soft. Also, I expected that "High-speed Broadband Internet" meant Wi-Fi because c'mon... who doesn't offer Wi-Fi nowadays-- but they had only wired internet which I can't use on my smart phone. On the plus side, the room was very clean and you're right in the middle of town.
