I booked the Cottage Mews largely based on the glowing reviews in trip advisor and confess to being a little disappointed. Maybe I read too much between the lines. Certainly Julie, the owner, could not have been more helpful but the accommodation was somewhat dated - eg coloured spa bath in the bedroom, old CRT TVs, paper thin walls - and whilst there is a lake view from a couple of the units there is a holiday home, reaching the end of a renovation programme, obstructing a significant part of it.
Nevertheless it represents good value for money provided you understand its limitations.

Yes, our spa baths are a bit of 'tradition by the lake'! New showers and toilets are going into several units this week, and new flooring in some as well. Our neighbour's building project is almost finished and we're pleased that it hasn't diminished the view from our front units. Glad you were able to take advantage of our November 'One Old-Fashioned Price' special and that you found Cottage Mews good value for money.

I could not have asked for more wonderful hosts. They really made our stay memorable. The rooms were clean. It was wonderful to have a kitchenette to make our own breakfast.

My wife and I stayed here a few weeks ago and the owner, Julie, was more than accomodating. She welcomed us and made us feel very special - and insisted that we try the vegimite with breakfast.
The room had a marvelous view of Lake Taupo, though there was some construction visible out back. There is also a wonderful Lakefront walk just down the road.
The rates at The Cottage Mews are some of the best values we've found in New Zealand. We loved it so much we promised to come back. Way to go, Julie - see you this weekend!

Thanks for your review. We admired your courage with the Vegemite! The building work down the front is all but finished and we are looking forward to having a new fence all the way to the lake before Christmas. Look forward to seeing you both again.

This hotel reminded me of a adult sized dolls house or cubby house with its sweet wall paper and rooms. it was incredibly comfortable and cozy. The hotel is a 5 second walk away from Lake Taupo and is only 2 mins drive to everything else. The bed was very comfortable and the room and kitchen were very clean. The upstairs and downstairs was great and made the place feel alot bigger then anywhere else we stayed. In the evening, we laid back in the spa with a glass of wine and watched a movie. (Yes, there are TV's both upstairs and downstair - very handy). We ate lunch at a restaurant called Dixy Browns which was only 2 minutes drive away. It was so good, we went back there for dinner. Definately stay here if you get the chance!

We stayed at The Cottage Mews Motel on our way to and from Auckland during the Easter holidays and we will be returning if ever in Taupo again. The hosts were friendly and helpful in every way and the accommodation was great. Fantastic value for money with a double bedroom upstairs (complete with spa bath) and two singles plus a fold out bed downstairs. The kitchenette was great for light meals and breakfast and the beds were comfortable and bathroom clean and water pressure good. Our children (9, 11 & 14 yrs) really enjoyed the cooked breakfast on the last morning and also the quick walk down to the lake to feed the birdlife. I particularly enjoyed an early morning stroll to the mirror like lake for some quiet solitude before the day began in earnest. The hosts were wonderful - my teenage son left his medication in a bag in the motel car park and my daughter left a hulla hoop under a bed and both items were kept for us until we returned the following week. We would highly recommend a stay at The Cottage Mews and believe it must be the best value place to stay in all of Taupo!

Very quaint accommodation. The rooms were clean and comfortable.

The upstairs retreat with spa was particularly appealing to my husband and I. We had our own TV upstairs and a small balcony that had views of the Lake.

There is a path that runs beside the accommodation and leads to the lake where you can go for lovely walks as the path runs all the way into the town centre.

The host was particulary friendly and helpful. My biggest regret is that I didn't have time to try the devonshire tea!

We (2 couples) stayed in 4 hotels during our holiday in New Zealand and this was certainly our favourite. We booked 2 separate rooms. As soon as we arrived, Julie and Terry (hosts of Cottage Mews) asked us if we would like coffee and tea. After saying yes, Julie immediately got us little jugs of milk and took it straight to our rooms while Terry checked us in. They were very friendly and helpful and provided recommendations and directions to thermal pools, Huka fall in Taupo and even information about Rotorua.

Rooms were very clean. There was even a spa in each of the 2 rooms and separate courtyards. Our bathroom needed a bit of renovating (I was told that they would be renovating this winter).

There was an easy pathway access from the back of Cottage Mews to Lake Taupo. Parking is also available on site, just a few steps away from the rooms.

All four of us thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Cottage Mews. We ordered breakfast on our last day as we needed to leave fairly early. I really liked the yogurt and berries. It tasted good and was very well presented. My partner really enjoyed the hot breakfast. We got complimentary newspaper as well.
