“Best stay while in New Zealand”
Reviewed April 8, 2010

We (2 couples) stayed in 4 hotels during our holiday in New Zealand and this was certainly our favourite. We booked 2 separate rooms. As soon as we arrived, Julie and Terry (hosts of Cottage Mews) asked us if we would like coffee and tea. After saying yes, Julie immediately got us little jugs of milk and took it straight to our rooms while Terry checked us in. They were very friendly and helpful and provided recommendations and directions to thermal pools, Huka fall in Taupo and even information about Rotorua.

Rooms were very clean. There was even a spa in each of the 2 rooms and separate courtyards. Our bathroom needed a bit of renovating (I was told that they would be renovating this winter).

There was an easy pathway access from the back of Cottage Mews to Lake Taupo. Parking is also available on site, just a few steps away from the rooms.

All four of us thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Cottage Mews. We ordered breakfast on our last day as we needed to leave fairly early. I really liked the yogurt and berries. It tasted good and was very well presented. My partner really enjoyed the hot breakfast. We got complimentary newspaper as well.

After staying in a few dull and functional motels in New Zealand, this place was a breath of fresh air. It's amazing the difference having an upstairs can make - as its name suggests, it really did have the feel of a quaint little cottage.

The manager I met was lovely and took the time to chat to us and make us feel really welcome.

The unit was very clean and well set up for cooking at home, in addition to having a BBQ on site which we made use of. Admittedly some of the furnishings were a bit dated but the manager said she had plans to update in the near future. It wasn't a big problem for us as the place has such charm but some people might prefer a more modern look.

We loved the spa bath located in the balcony of the bedroom though it overlooked the car park so make sure you shut your blinds....

We were also impressed by the cheap internet rate - $5 for the duration of our two-nights stay, which makes a pleasant change from the rip-off rates charged by some motels.

This was a good value, friendly and charming motel which I'd have no hesitation in recommending.

You'll never want to stay in a cookie-cutter motel room again after enjoying the unique Cottage Mews. Really well-built and layed-out rooms, with nice detailing and fixtures. Mine had a private back patio, kitchenette, and a spa tub.

The managers are the best. You will love them.

I liked having the option of breakfast and a free newspaper in the morning.

The location is excellent although not exactly central to the main business district. I did walk there and back, however. Beautiful 45-minute stroll along the lake.

However, I can't endorse this motel until they do something about the room furnishings. The chairs, table, carpet, and bed in my room were in serious need of an upgrade. I don't care if they have to up their prices, but they need to do something. I wasn't crazy about the bedspread, wallpaper, or drapes either, but I could live with those. They might want to do something about the kiddie-height bathroom sink and mirror too. Charming, but not practical for anyone over 5 foot 2.

The real plus of this motel is that it is really good value for money in a town where large and expensive facilities abound. Julie and Terry Slee were very accomodating and friendly, assisting with bookings of some activities, providing us with local information and directing us some really useful local "treats" to enjoy that we would have otherwise overlooked.. The family suite was large with a separate upstairs bedroom with spa for the adults. We were really impressed with the cleanliness and attention to detail by the proprietors to make the room cozy and welcoming. We really enjoyed the individual private courtyard attached to our unit, the spa and proximity to the lakeside. Very impressive motel with high standards of cleanliness and service. Look no further if you after good value in a central location with friendly people!

We both absolutely loved the room and spa, By far the best few nights in our 3 week trip on both islands. Didn't mind the short drive into town and even though it was on a main road it was QUIET! Great value too. Wonderful people, made us feel very welcome.

We only stayed here for one night (in the Nook), but it was a great little hotel. About 3km from the centre of town, but it's right next to the Lake so an easy (and beautiful) walk (and there are lots of taxis about to get you home again!). Great staff, very helpful and friendly.
