We had a lovely corner upstairs/downstairs small apartment with a view of the lake from upstairs. The accommodations were clean and comfortable. Julie was lovely and very accommodating. We had dinner at The Ploughman up the street which was very good. Would stay here again.

The Cottage Mews was a great choice of ours. We stayed in a room called the Nook and it was lovely. The room was very clean and comfortable with ample space and its own little courtyard area. Hosts were helpful but not intrusive. I would stay here again if I visited Taupo again.

We had a two night stay in December 2012, and had been contacted beforehand to inform us that the lake end room that we had booked had unfortunately had a water leak and was to be redecorated during our stay. We were offered a free upgrade to the family room instead, which we took.

The motel itself looks great, very different in style to anywhere else we stayed. The owners were extremely friendly and helpful, and our cooked breakfasts were excellent.

The hotel is located near to the lake, accessible via a short path from the back of the motel. From there you can walk along the walkway all the way to Taupo town, which is a pleasant 45 minute walk away. The beach by the motel is a wonderful spot to watch the sun setting towards the distant volcanoes of Tongariro National Park.

The family room was rather tired looking downstairs. There was a lot of wood panelling, which meant that it was rather dark, and although there was a patio area, the chairs needed a good clean and the patio needed a bit of TLC. There wasn't a lot of natural light downstairs.

Upstairs was brighter, with a very comfy bed, and the spa bath was a welcome addition.

Cottage Mews scores highly because of the friendly, welcoming staff, and refurbishing the family room would certainly make it a motel I would recommend.

We stayed here 2 nights in December 12 just before Christmas. Prior to our arrival we received notification from the owners that our lake end room was flooded and were being offered the family room with a free breakfast as an alternative.
Upon arrival we were met by warm and friendly staff and were shown to our room. The family room, whilst large and on 2 levels, was in need of modernization. We had walked into an 80's time warp, where everything was looking very tired and dated. The downstairs was very dark and had very little natural light coming through the patio doors, due to the overgrown and shabby private garden area at the back. The master bedroom upstairs was so much brighter and lighter, as it had light coming in from both the front and back of the room. The decor here was very floral and quaint. I liked this room, as it was spacious and light, with a balcony that had 2 chairs on it, however, I wasn't sure how safe it was to sit out there and the chairs looked like they hadn't been wiped down and used for many months and were filthy.
Putting the decor aside, the staff were lovely and couldn't do enough to help you, always with a smile. They even offered us discount vouchers to wai-o-tapu, which was great.
The location of the motel was a 2 mile walk around the lake from the center of Taupo, which suited us fine and only took a couple of minutes to the lakeside.

Okay, i can't really qualify that as i've never been in any other motel in Taupo, but i've seen a LOT driving through town. Cottage Mews is really pretty on the outside, and it's equally well appointed on the inside. Anything that you'd want for is included in this motel. free parking, wifi, laundry, 20 second walk to a beautiful beach side, little private courtyard, great whirlpool bath, clean spacious room with a full kitchen and a very nice bed...and extemely good customer service. It really is everything they advertise and more. It's about 3km from the centre of town, but as we had a car it wasn't an issue. it's pretty walkable if your limbs are in good working order. and they rent bikes on site. Its a very comfortable quaint place to be, and the best place i could think of coming "home" to after an all day Tongariro Crossing trek. Highly recommended!

We stayed in a garden studio unit at the Mews Cottage Motel in March 2013 as part of a nine week trip round NZ. The motel is located on the main road into Taupo and yet was very quiet. The room included some characterful cottagey touches. The bed linen and towels were pristine and the room was very clean. The small private garden at the rear of the room was a surprising bonus. Given its location and quality, the motel was extremely good value for money. Highly recommended.

My partner and I booked four nights in, "the Nook" in March of 2013. The manager sent us an email indicating we may want a bigger place for four nights, but we opted to stick with the Nook since it was cheaper. We found it to be extemely cute and private. I absolutely loved the layout of this room. It made very good use of space. The only thing to have improved this room would have been additional hanger space.

The Nook had a kitchenette with a microwave, mini refrigerator, toaster, hot water pot, tableware, two chairs and a table. There was also a small private patio with another table, two more chairs and an umbrella just off the kitchenette.

There were two comfortable chairs and a small table to watch TV from. The TV was attached to a wall swivel so you could watch TV in bed if you want. The bed was comfortable.

The bathroom had a sink, toilet and shower.

The managers were DELIGHTFUL people! They were always very helpful and pleasant- some of the nicest people I've ever met. We enjoyed every encounter with them. We had a few encounters with the cleaning crew, mostly asking for directions. They were always very pleasant as well.

Cottage Mews is not directly on Lake Taupo, but it is VERY close and several of the rooms have a lake view. There is direct lake access along a short path (less than a minute's walk). It's an easy walk into town.

If you are staying in the Lake Taupo area, stay here! There is a reason this place is rated so highly on Trip Advisor. You won't be disappointed. Rates are reasonable.
