Reception was quick & easy & dont forget your map. This place has got nooks & crannies everywhere. The twin room was plain but very open, spacious & tidy. Has the basic amenties availble with good sized bathrooms.
Facilities at the resort are fantastic with conference, bars & entertainment facilities.
The place is spread out so it doesnt seem congested or noisey.
Parking is everywhere, take a look at your nearest exits & entrys as there are normally parking options closer to your room other than the main entrance. Otherwise it can be a small hike.
Only downfall is this place is miles from town & is expensive via taxi to & from town.

We really enjoyed our stay here - staff very helpful, facilities excellent and food delicious. We were on a voucher deal and the special set menu for the meal included with the deal wasn't quite as exciting as the ordinary menu, but the quality of the food was good and the portions generous. We ate at the hotel restaurant on our second night as well, and the food on the ordinary menu was exquisite. Not needing to book the spa pools was a bonus. Do be aware that the hotel charges for outside phonecalls, even if within Taupo - this isn't made clear in the hotel guide. Anyway, would definitely come here again - there aren't many hotels with rabbits AND geothermal vents in the grounds!

Attending a conference we stayed a few nights. The reception staff were casual and friendly as well as professional. The room was comfortable, only drawback was the hot water in the basin was more lukewarm. Housekeeping was a little piggy...I came back to find the housekeeper just rinsing our used cups in the dirty bathroom hand basin...after making a complaint we received a genuine apology and complimentary meal.Relaxing atmosphere! Conference facilities were great including all the associated meals and afternoon and morning teas. Restaurant service was excellent and the food was really good. Perfect place to have a conference!

We booked a king room online at $155 on our way through to Auckland. The hotel is on 600+ acres with a walking track all the way to Huka Falls. On checkin we were upgraded to a King Spa suite as it was on the ground floor and we wanted to be close to where we could park our motorbike. I could not fault our room - it had an adjoining lounge with kitchen, large bathroom with spa bath separate shower and all extremely clean. From looking at the photos on this site, we had a newly renovated room.
There is a lovely heated pool, a sun deck with bar and the grounds are beautifully maintained. A pleasant surprise was our meal in the restaurant that evening. The service and food were fantastic even though the restaurant was nearly at capacity. We had a great night, and our group went to the bar afterward for a few drinks.
The next morning, after a hearty breakfast we found we had a mechanical problem on our bike. Thankfully the resort has it's own full-time maintenance crew and they were very kind loaning us some tools.

All in all, a great stay. The only thing that I would love to see would be an upgrade in the hotel bar as it lacks atmosphere and character. Perhaps something a little more pub-like with booths to create more intimacy.

Taupo was a pit stop before a long trip down to Wellington.. It was a good place to stay for a night. Staff was friendly and helpful and the entrance was very welcoming.. however as soon as we got to the car park where our room was is another story. Entrance to the rooms was very hard to find, stairs was the closest for us and the elevator was down the road (if you had a lot of luggage I would suggest getting dropped off there first! otherwise expect a good exercise up two flights of stairs!). Next to the entrance to the stairs was obviously their backdoor to the cleaning facilities.. it looks terrible and it felt like it was the back of a restaurant with bins and old sheets around. The carpets definitely need to be re-done (imagine the 80's red carpets with yellow chandelier designs all over it).. very shabby looking as what someone else below has described! The room itself was very clean, the bathroom also needs some renovation as the hand basin was cracked and the shower tiles had black mould forming! Outside of the balcony area had a lot of cobwebs and windows was very dirty.. it would be great if a bit of cleaning once in a while for those areas were done as I don't think it would be very accommodating for families with young children playing around there. Overall it was a good place to stay for a night or two but if longer, I would suggest finding something situated a bit closer into the city centre as it can be tricky getting in the centre if you do not have your own vehicle.

Room Tip: Rooms close to the elevator would be helpful for families with younger children with prams and a lot...

This is the third time I've stayed here and will keep coming back. We were a group of 40 staying here for Christmas and were housed in villas and studio rooms. We were all very happy with our accommodation and in particular enjoyed the self-contained villas with the outdoor areas with picnic tables. The children loved the playground and pools and the adults enjoyed the 9 hole golf course and private spas. As it was Christmas I don't think any of us made it to the gym, but it did look good. We dined in all of the restaurants and in particular enjoyed the Italian buffet at Fairways. The bars were very good, unfortunately there was only one barman in the house bar and when all the ladies decided to order cocktails it did take a very long time for us to get our drinks. Be that as it may, he was very friendly and sure worked hard to get them to us as fast as possible. Christmas dinner was perfect! The standard of food was fantastic and everyone of us loved the selection and quality of the food. The staff were also very friendly and attentive considering they had to work on such a day. Everyone commented on the food and atmosphere and agreed it was an excellent decision to spend Christmas here. We ended our stay by eating in the Pavillion restaurant and were extremely pleased we took the opportunity. The food was outstanding and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals, I was pleased as I had said how good the food was last time I stayed (about 3.5 years earlier); it was great to see that it is still a fantastic place to dine. The resort was very busy over the Christmas period, but you wouldn't have known as it is quite spread out. All of the group were very pleased with our decision to stay, we'll be back.

Spend 5 nights in a nice chalet accommodation with all the amenities provided including a kitchenette & microwave oven with all crockery, cutlery to whip up a quick simple meal, particularly enjoying our own steamed green mussels! The breakfast and the special themed dinner were also very good and value for money. Services are prompt, professional & efficient but mostly friendly as Kiwis are known for, and you find them a lot here. There is much to do with tennis courts, an outdoor heated pool, kids club etc that it is a good place to chill out with the family or use it a good base to explore all the nearby tourists attractions. I will highly recommend to my friends and families and will look forward to enjoy Taupo and its surroundings but staying at the Wairakei Resort anytime!
