This was our last stop on our trip and we were amazed with our kitchenette room, the facilities were great and the access to the upstairs shared areas was also good to have as an option. The room was large and having both a double and single bed was a nice treat for a twin room. We were welcomed and given helpful information about the places we wanted to get to. The undercover parking was good and the location perfect, close to town but away from traffic and noise. We really enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it and return again on our next trip to Taupo. It was good value for money.

Ordered a double room in the phone for 80$. Was told that the room was a "Double Suite". Also advertised was an sea view and a jacuzzi, so the extra dollars seemed fair.

Surprisingly, the room also included two bunk beds. Asking the manager he replied that these were "family rooms", and all other rooms were occupied. Jacuzzi was completely empty, and our room had great view of a fence.

It would be fair to ask that room name should be changed from "Double Room" to "Family Room".
When a customer asks for a "Double Room" and all that is available is a "Family Room", the answer given should be:
"No double room available, but we do have a Family Room"
and not: "Yes, we have a Double Room Suite available."

On room showers were decent and so was the common area and kitchen, located close to bars.

Overall an average under valued hostel. Should consider heavily to change their room marketing strategy to be more fair and clear.

I would not return or reccomend staying in this hostel.

We are sorry that this guest (a couple travelling together) weren't happy with their choice of room. This guest actually had a "tantrum" in our reception area and swore in front of my children who were in the office at the time. Another guest commented on her "lack of control".

The guest phoned via cellphone (3 times in total). Guest states that the room offered was $80 - she neglects to add that she paid $70 as she was a bbh member - she was thoroughly rapt with the price over the phone.

I cannot understand why a few extra beds in the room created such an issue for this guest...... she asked for a double room and was told she could have a "double suite" - ie: with extra beds. Whether she did not listen or did not understand what sort of room she was booking we will never know. She accused my husband of putting her in a "dorm room" - he stated that the room was private but all he got back was abuse. As far as I am concerned as long as the room was private and had a double bed - it can be classed as a double room also (the bed was actually a Queen). When the guest was told "all other rooms were occupied" - the only other private rooms are our kitchenette rooms (which also have extra beds but are sold as double/twin/single or group/family rooms) - so she would not have been happy with this choice either apparently.

As for a "Sea View" - we do not anywhere (in print or online), ever or verbally state that Tiki Lodge has a Sea View (the nearest sea view is 2 hours drive away!), therefore we will never have a Sea View. Neither do we state anywhere that any bedrooms have a Lake View - the building has been designed with Lake Views from the communal areas (which can be enjoyed all day and night) , as you can't enjoy a view when you are asleep!!

The spa pool (we don't advertise having a Jacuzzi) - was empty merely for cleaning - a fair and reasonable explanation really. We prefer to clean the spa out rather than have floating food, grass etc enjoying the soak with our guests!! I think these last 2 issues were merely a knee-jerk reaction to not being happy with the room they booked rather than genuine issues.

Our private rooms are all multi-use rooms i.e. can be used for double/twin/single or group occupancy and we do state this when these rooms are booked. Most guests are only concerned with whether the room will be private or not and don't seem to mind any extra beds included in the rooms. This has worked well for 9 years and this is the first major "gripe" that has arisen in regards to room set-ups.

This was one of the most expensive backpackers we stayed at during a brief North-Island visit. However it was well worth it as this was also the cleanest and quietest places we stayed.

The kitchen is really lovely, not to mention spotlessly clean, and it was nice to finally be provided with cloths to wipe down benches! Laundry is highly recommended as the cheapest we encountered, and the double-ensuite room we had a comfortable bed, not the double/bunk often encountered in hostels. Hostel 'rules' were clearly expressed and reasonable.

We especially appreciated that there was no traffic noise or noise from other guests, as we had a very early wake-up for the shuttle bus to the Tongariro Crossing. I would thoroughly recommend Tiki as a base for those considering doing the crossing and staying in Taupo - the location is not as central as some of the other backpackers, but it seemed quieter, and it was the last pickup location and first drop off location on the shuttle route we were on, maximizing sleeping time and minimizing time spent on the return bus whilst longing for a hot shower!

We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us.... Tiki Lodge is truly a hidden gem - located away from the noise of traffic and rowdy guests (however it really does depend on who is staying at the time - some guests can make up for a weeks worth of quiet!!!). Enjoy the rest of your travels...

Many thanks for the review. Glad you enjoyed your visit here. Unfortunately certain guests can be quite inconsiderate to others with regards to noise, but this can occur at any place, be it motel, 5 star hotel, campground etc so just the luck of the draw really....

Mum visited me from the UK over the Christmas break and one of the hostels I took her to was Tiki Lodge. We stayed in a downstairs family room, that had a kitchen inside and a fully equipped bathroom a metre or so across the hall. This place was perfect for my Mum as it catered for her every need. I felt comfortable staying here with her and also enjoyed it myself. Good socialising areas upstairs with a great balcony over-looking Lake Taupo. Thanks very much for the stay, will be back soon!

We were eager to try a hostel during our recent trip to Taupo and found Tiki Lodge to be a good option in the Lake Taupo area. We stayed here just one night while passing through and were quite happy with our stay, would have had no problem staying here a few extra nights.

Location of Tiki Lodge is pretty good, just off the main area of town central and lake, both 8-10 minute walk away. Room availability enquiry and check-in procedure was quick, efficient and staff behind the counter was generally friendly. Lobby area had plenty of activity information and hostel/guesthouse rules were well posted.

We liked the double room, finding it basic (hostel standards) but meeting all the important requirements; beds were surprisingly comfortable, pillows soft, towels provided and we did have a private bathroom. Room locked well and provided a good sense of security. Other guests were generally quiet and very little noise was heard throughout the night, allowing a very good night sleep (something we hadn't always had during our many years of hostel/guesthouse lodging experiences).

Further, there were four additional bunk beds in our room, making this a very good room/suite option for families traveling through and looking for good value-for-money room in Taupo. Overall we were quite pleased with our particular room finding it above par for hostel and guesthouse quality standards.

We were also happy with the general facilities at Tiki Lodge. Upstairs hallway was decorated respectfully and nice, a couple of internet terminals were located there. Additionally, upstairs, there was a common TV room, a large lounge room as well as a large kitchen, sufficient for 3-4 groups to prepare food, cook and dine simultaneously. Adequate cookery and dishes were also available and of generally good enough quality.

There was a good-sized outdoor balcony beyond the kitchen, affording views of Lake Taupo and parts of the central township. This was a nice place to spend a bit of time when the sun was going down. Below the hostel rooms there was a car park area, enough space for probably 10-12 vehicles. Lastly, the environment of Tiki Lodge, at least when we stayed, was generally quite and the other guests here were all good natured. There was no party-central environment or any loud noise at all, at least on the night we stayed here, making this an easy hostel in which to feel comfortable and relaxed, particularly for families that enjoy hostel experiences.

Overall, we were quite pleased with our experience at Tiki Lodge and we would have been happy to have stayed here some extra nights, perhaps during future trips to Taupo.

Room Tip: Good car park right below Tiki Lodge, making this a good, affordable accommodation for self-drive vi...

It's a pretty average hostel, with positives and negatives. The rooms and shared bathrooms were clean, beds were fine, nice hot showers. Kitchen and TV room were sort of dirty, cluttered, not cleaned on a regular basis. Fine for a night or two if you don't care about cooking. Location is on the far end of the downtown, a ten-minute walk to bars and restaurants. It has three computers for internet and one is broken.

Many thanks for the comments. Our communal areas are cleaned twice daily - we do not want to appear to hover over guests and spot clean every few minutes - twice a day is sufficient therefore it is unreasonable to expect these areas to be spotless at all times. Tiki Lodge is located on the town edge - merely 5 minutes walk to the bars - closest restaurant/bar is 1 minute away.
