“A beautiful, quiet place, wonderful hosts”
Reviewed February 21, 2008

Among the 11 places we stayed in during our N-Z trip ( from 200 up to over 1000 NZD) Taupo Garden lodge is among the top 3 places which we would recommend. Incredibly beautiful garden, 100% quiet place, very comfortable, our hosts Suzanne and William were so nice to us that we felt like part of their family. They are people of very refined tastes who can tell you a lot about N-Z and its culture (and they were incredibly helpful when we asked for help and advice concerning activities before our trip) The food was exquisite and comparable to some of the best restaurants of our home town: Paris/France. We thus decided to try their daughter's restaurant (Tasca) when visting Auckland: the "Cordero" lamb there was as delicious as what we had in the best churrascarias of south Argentina. This family knows how to treat people ! A wonderful stay. (On South Island we recommend Mount Rosa lodge, a few kilometers away from Queenstown, same price range, same wonderful experience. In the Coromandel peninsula the incredible quality for the money --less than 200 NZD-- and kindness of the hosts at Colonial Homestay deserves to be highlighted/promoted).

  • Liked — Wonderful hosts and location in the midle of a gorgeous garden
  • Disliked — Those who want an impressive , panoramic view from their room window won't get that

We can't speak too highly of William and Suzanne and their wonderful hospitality. They were really helpful, as well as being very friendly and sociable. The gardens are a particular highlight and are superb - a tonic in themselves.

We would certainly hope to stay with them again if we return to NZ some day.

We stayed at Taupo Garden Lodge for 3 nights. It's a lovely property with a gorgeous garden set in a secluded and quiet part of the town, a complete antidote to the brashness of Taupo town.
The hosts William and Suzanne are delightful and made us feel very welcome. They can't do enough for you and always have good suggestions for activiites and places to eat. It's true New Zealand hospitality at its best.
We stayed in the Garden Suite which is an annexe to the main house. It gave us everything we needed; a comfortable bed (with wonderful pillows), space to sit both inside and out with privacy, and whilst the bathroom may be on the small side it's perfectly acceptable - it even has a lovely view.
Breakfasts were taken with William and Suzanne; great food and lively conversation which made a great start to each day.
If you want somewhere with a unique charecter and real New Zealand hospitality this is a great place to stay.

I had some misgivings when I booked, but this was a convenient stop off point -- I should have listened to myself, and looked more closely at the photos. Outdated and old accommodation, a musty smell which permeated everywhere including the bed, cramped bathroom, very average food, hosts living in another era. Significantly overpriced and an anomally compared to other Heritage Lodges. This property is way past its sell by date.
