I didn't stay at DeBretts, but did spend a day in heaven at their amazing spa. Naturally hot water cascades into beautiful pools which are cleaned daily, so NOT chlorinated, but rich in minerals nutritious to the skin. A beautiful location. I'd have given 5 (or 10!) stars, but was bothered by the loud and absolutely tasteless music piped over the area. When I complained, they were very kind and switched it off, saying I wasn't the first person to complain. So if this happens to you, just let them know it's not OK. The treatments I had were absolutely first-class - a lovely little beauty area right next to the pools, and the practitioners were truly expert. A fabulous day out. Entry to the pools is complimentary if you have treatments booked, and otherwise also very reasonable. There's a cafe too.

had a wonderful stay staff very friendly.nice breakfast.nice to know somethings do not get changed to much have been on many overseas trips and several cruises and dollar for dollar debretts is very good value.did not find the distance to taupo at all bad or the lake unless you have elderly with you.the chalet we were in was large enough and very comfortable.it was above average for the money you had to pay.it is 5star but should be looked at in the context of 5star holiday camp not as 5star hilton next door would stay again without hesitation

Room Tip: pick a chalet behind reception as is close to everything

The spa pools have been around for a long time and could do with a make over, although they staff were friendly.
We stayed with our campervan and it felt like we were all packed in like sardines.
Had the usual amenities expected, laundry, token kiddies play park, cooking, showers/toilets.

We stayed in one of the three new lakeside villas. They were filled with everything to make for an exceptional night and would make for a very comfortable long term visit. The view is amazing, although be warned that it is too far to walk to any of Taupo and several km from the lake. On the map it looked closer!

Very large and tidy but I found the sparse walls uncomfortable - no art and the metal sheet walls did make me feel a little as though I was sleeping in a shipping container!

Huge flatscreen, full gas kitchen but disappointingly no washer/dryer. I know its a holiday park but with a 5 star room you expect your own washer and dryer, especially as it is clearly set up for family holidays.

As a side point, the villa is West facing so unfortunately it is drenched in the afternoon sun, making the view a little hard to admire in the heat and glare from the deck. It would really benefit with a transparent sunscreen rollar blind. Also, it has no insulation so DeBretts are wasting energy cooling it over the day and then it needs heating over night- even in summer. For a supposedly eco friendly construction the architect missed some simple things that would have greatly improved its energy consumption.

Room Tip: Get take away and eat it in your villa - the view is better than any restaurant in Taupo and it'...

We stayed for two nights in a campervan using a powered site. The bathroom facilities were above average, clean and fairly new in our area.

The thermal pools were great and we actually went twice, both evenings - though fairly busy we were able to find a quiet spot both nights and enjoyed it tremendously.

Though the reception area is open until 20:30, the cafe itself is restricted in terms of when you can get hot drinks, I'm not sure of the hours as we didn't manage to get a coffee (not sure of the time but I would estimate after 17:00?).

In terms of location, it is a fair way from the town of Taupo, so if you are travelling in a campervan or motorhome you will need to either take a cab (or bicycle) into town, or pack up and take the van with you if you don't want a long walk (approx 4km). There is a fabulous view of the lake from the cafe/reception area.

DeBretts provided a fantastic place for us to relax and refresh during our 17 day holiday across the South and North Islands. We stayed two nights in one of the motel rooms. The thermal pools were very relaxing and our two teenage daughters loved the water slide. We had a terrific package deal which included entry for all of us to the thermal pool for two days and also a complimentary bottle of New Zealand white wine. One criticism would be the outside lights remaining on all night - very bright for sleeping. The staff at Reception were very friendly and extremely helpful.

I was fairly disappointed by this holiday park. It came recommended by a friend but I found it to be lacking in almost any aspect considering it's hefty price tag. We paid $280 for one night in a cabin. It has to be admitted that the cabin (superiour) was nice and brand new. It featured a good kitchen, separate master bedroom and a OK bathroom. There was no view to the lake though being advertised. However the rest of this resort is less impressive:
- Playground area is small and only three very old toys. Dangerous and old trampoline. My kids got bored after 15 minutes.
- The thermal baths are old and overcrowded. Best is that after you pay $280 for a cabin (!! not a room in a 5 star resort!) you are being told that you have to pay an extra $40 for your family to get into the thermal baths. That makes it $320 so far.
- The shop is very basic, they do not have a restaurant and only serve snacks. Have to go to Hilton next door (and spend another $120 to feed the family) or cook yourself.
- Kind of out of town, location is not anywhere next to anything, no shops, no attractions within walking distance
- The thermal baths are overcrowded because they also serve as the town's public pool. Many many people there, literally hundreds. A lot for 2 small pools and one slide. Limited kids attractions, no food and only soft drinks available. Kind of oldish, very used and not well maintained, would need an update. One pool is so hot that it is completely unsuitable for children. Leaves teh kid with one pool and the slide. No lawn areas, no other attractions. We left after an hour.
- Campervan places are atrocious, very tight, standing on gravel with almost no lawns, you would have more space in a shopping-mall parking lot. Absolutely not recommended for campervan travellers.
