Enjoyed a too-brief two-night stay at Tauhara Sunrise and can't recommend it highly enough. Everything was wholly wonderful: the location overlooking Lake Taupo, Taupo, and the mountains beyond; the hosts, Becky and Robert; the food they shared in the evenings (snacks and wine tasting on the terrace overlooking the lake, where "snacks" means homemade hors d'oeuvres of fresh steamed mussels with pesto -- nothing from a package) and morning (excellent and extensive homemade breakfasts, where "homemade" includes the cereal and yogurt and bread); the advice tailored to each person; the extensively stocked refrigerator available to the guest rooms, at no extra charge; we're sure we've forgotten something great among the many wonderful things ... Becky and Robert set an *exceptionally* high standard in hospitality.

The host and hostess were very helpful and accommodating, helping us arrange activities like bungy jumping and skydiving and recommending restaurants for meal times. The breakfasts and happy hours were a highlight of the stay, both Rob and Becky are great cooks!
The bedrooms were tastefully decorated and very comfortable, including good books and great NZ wine in the fridge, which we did our best to put a dent in! We slept in the 'smallest' 'budget' room which still boasted great views of the lake, a sizeable bathroom and walk in closet! Gorgeous!
A quality establishment, we really enjoyed our visit with Tauhara Sunrise and recommend it to all.

My husband and I have stayed at the Tauhara Sunrise twice and consider it a "must" when we visit the region. It's a wonderful combination of the comforts of home and the benefits of a vacation. The food, wine, quality of lodging, and hospitality are excellent. There are amenities on site, and Rob and Becky do their utmost to ensure a pleasant experience, both at the lodge and in the Taupo region. They enjoy good conversation, and you will also, when you gather with your fellow guests before and during dinner. Dinner on property is excellent, always delicious. Rob is a music buff and has an extensive collection of music for your listening enjoyment. He also enjoys fine wines and will share advice on vineyards of the region. He's also helped us plan day trips and fishing expeditions in the Taupo area. His advice has been spot on and geared to our interests. Becky is an absolute delight, and I crave her homemade yogurt. Her warm smile and gentle manner make you feel right at home the minute you meet her. Her warmth makes the tensions of home disappear from your shoulders. If that doesn't work, she's a certified masseuse and she'll massage your cares away. You know you've found "the" spot when you relax as you walk through the door, appreciate the comforts provided, have the independence to do other activities, and are sad when it's time to leave. That's how we feel about T. Sunrise. - - - P.S. We've stayed in both the king suite and the Chalet d'Amour. Both are very nice and offer different advantages. The king suite was well-appointed, quiet, comfortable, convenient, cheaper, and had a nice view of the lake. The "love shack" is much larger, also nicely appointed, has the nicest bathroom, full fridge and breakfast bar, a table for dining on your own, fireplace, TV, etc. Since it's a separate building and has a separate driveway, it also offers more privacy, if desired. Here's to continued success and a job well done!

This is one of my favorite places in the world, I have been here 3 times, and this time I brought the family with me, we had a great stay, and even the teenagers enjoyed themselves. Rob and Becky went out of their way to look after our needs and arrange horse riding for my daughter and myself at a property about 30 minutes drive, which was a highlight for her, they also arranged for them to go Bungy Jumping into the river, and they thoroughly enjoyed that adventure also. The food, the hospitality, the wine and the friendly atmosphere make this a must stay. I have this as a feature on my blog and will be returning there again in 2009. The view from every room is breathtaking and is a constantly changing panorama that makes for some great photo opportunities.

We went there in NZ winter (July) and were not very impressed. The room (suite) was nice, but the lodge was not heated well. The window (as in many places in NZ) were single-glazed, so they had virtually not insulation value. Thus, the picture window that overlooked the lake was totally obscured by moisture condensation for the whole morning. The gardens were well landscaped and pretty, even in the winter. The welcome reception was lame relative to the story on the website, there was no dinner being served because the wife of the establishment was in Texas, and breakfast was rather scanty compared to expectations. The fresh-squeezed orange juice came from outside and was on the sour side. Not good. Our sense is that this place is on a downward slide from better years of service. Generally, overpriced for what is received. They ought to have winter rates if they are going to cut back on amenities.

At the time this guest visited, my wife, who is from Texas, had traveled home to spend some time with her Mother as her grandmother had recently passed away. Thankfully she is now back with me in New Zealand. The reason no dinner was offered is because per our web site, dinners must be pre-booked and are generally only available on Friday and Saturday nights. We offer a complimentary shuttle into town where there are numerous lovely restaurants. The guest referred to the juice being from "outside." We serve NZ's top brand of freshly squeezed orange juice (not from concentrate) but we do not make our own juice. Being from "outside" means not squeezed at home that morning apparently. If you are considering Tauhara Sunrise you can rest assured the welcome will be warm. All of our guests, with the exception of this writer, leave with nothing but good to say.

My wife and I had a 2 night stay - our room was amazing, there are no bad views at this place, every room captures an amazing view of the Lake - Rob and Becky go well beyond the call of duty - great conversations over breakfast - local knowledge on where to go and what to do. We were in town to attend a Wedding, Becky offered to drive us over so that we could enjoy the celebration and then take a taxi home. The breakfasts are amazing - the room was modern, comfortable and very well appointed. Without a doubt we will be back next time our travels bring us to Taupo. Thanks Becky and Rob - a great mix of Texas and Kiwi hospitality!!

My wife and I stayed at the Tauhara Sunrise lodge as part of our travels around New Zealand. We were backpacking through both North & South Island but I arranged our stay here as a Valentines surprise.... and was not disappointed. The lodge has wonderful views out over the lake, is extremely well appointed and the rooms are fantastic. We also opted for the meal in by hosts Becky & Rob, which was really good fun as we had the company of the other guests and made for a great evening, the food & wine was also a real treat. A wonderful stay & experience I only wish we could have stayed longer.
