As a party of 6 (two children and 4 adults) we found the large unit at Karaka Tree great. We had two bathrooms and two bedrooms on the ground floor. Plenty of room for all of us. The spa off one of the bedrooms was great too.
Simple kitchen. some of the interior abit dated but no problem for us.
Staff were great. Let us in early as the room was ready. Helpful and friendly banter. Thanks.

My wife and I stayed 2 nights at the Karaka Tree as a part of a tour up the North island from Napier. The motel is handily located to find at the end of this journey as it is situated almost on the junction between Highway 5 and the main strip through Taupo. As such, access and noise can be an issue at times athough not in the room. The motel is named after a somewhat tired looking native tree to the rear of the property - appropriate as the motel is somewhat tired too and in need of a refurb. It is also a long
(but scenic) lakeside walk from Taupo centre. For all these negative points we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. The staff are great, laundry facilities good, the bed is comfortable and our large room adequately equipped. The bathroom "suite" of two rooms is enormous, and has to be, one being dominated by a sizable natural mineral spa bath. Beware though, the heat from this water would cook rice, up to 80C apparently, and certainly so hot that when it flows into Lake Taupo when you have finished with it, the stream adjacent to the hotel is still warm - try it!. You do of course supplement this water with cold from the bathtap for a quirky and most pleasant spa. Note - no oils or soaps please! Eating facilites nearby are limited although the Lakeside Hotel, a ten minute walk further out of Lake Taupo is very good value and offers decent food. There is also a Millenium hotel almost opposite the Karaki Tree if you are feling more affluent!. The motel is also ideally situated for the lakeside walks to Two Mile, Three Miles and Four Mile beaches - the clue about distance is in the names! In our view this side of the lake is much more pleasant than the other and offers unspolit bathing, restful seats and picnic areas. The lake itself hosted the 2010 New Zealand leg of the World Powerboat Championship during our time there and always offers a range of water-based activities. However, nearby there is also the incredible Huka Falls, Craters of The Moon Geo-thermal Park and Float Plane/ Helicopter rides - certainly enough for a memorable few days

We stayed at the Karaka Tree Motel this last weekend.
The room was ready, clean and tidy when we arrived and the first thing we did was have a spa in our very own spa pool, great.
We ended up having two dips.

We filled it up ourselves, as the hot water comes from directly below. Therefore we could have it to the temperature we liked and we knew it would be clean.

The lake, which we could see if we looked out the door of the unit, was just across the road and would you believe, there are hot spots in the sand in this area, so in some places the water was warm. Unfortunately the kids didn't feel like a dip, but I'm sure younger ones would love it.

We borrowed a DVD to play our own ones we had bought with us at no charge.

The manager and manageress were very polite and friendly on all occasions.

The breakfasts we ordered the night before arrived on time and warm.

Even though we were close to the main highway we were not bothered by the noise.

The size of the kitchen and the unit in general was good and worked well, the kids even had their own room.

We would stay there again if we were in Taupo as we thought the value for money was good.

This was around half an hour's walk along the lakeside from Taupo centre. Halfway there though is a pub called the Jolly Good Fellows which sells English beers and good meals.

The reception staff were very helpful - we had to ask for tea and coffee sachets as these had been omitted from the room.

The main selling points were that it was near the lake, had parking and was apparently the only place to have a geothermal mineral pool in every room. This was our first experience of such a pool and we enjoyed it. The room was spacious but dated, and although reasonably clean it needed renovating, some grouting was dusty in the shower room and the wall was peeling in the pool area. The fabric on the bedquilt was 'pilled', the carpet and sofa felt well used.

The motel offered wi-fi at a charge so we didn't use it, but it was not until we checked out and went to the Mobil garage next door that we discovered that they offer a free wi-fi hotspot (not accessible from the room though).

In comparison with other motels of a similar charge we felt that this one was not brilliant, only OK.

This hotel is a really pleasant walk along the lake from the town centre. The man who booked us in was lovely. When he showed us to the room and was showing us all how to use things etc he wasn't happy with the spa pool so moved us to another room - to be honest it looked ok to us but the next rooms spa pool was less dusty. The rooms have everything that you will need but the star of the show is the Mineral Spa Pool, which every room apparently has. You are getting the water from 25m below and you have to add as much cold water as the natural mineral water just so its cool enough to get in. Could have soaked in it for hours - wonderful.

We travelled to Taupo in early July with our 2 young kids, and booked the Karaka tree primarily because it was the cheapest motel with private spa rooms.

The rooms themselves are very spacious (we had a 1 bedroom) and the private spas are very private with high courtyard walls around them and no visibility from the rooms above.

The furnishings and spas themselves are getting older and could use revamping, but they worked fine, and after the first hour we no longer noticed.

Anyone travelling with young kids knows a good level of self catering options are required in any accommodation and these rooms have the works! I had everything i needed to cook dinner for the family, and the mini fridge was a good size for all our provisions.

The adults bed is sensibly in the same room as the tv so you can put the kids to bed and close the door, which is great.

There is a guest laundry with HUGE washer and dryr so you can do all your washing in one go, which is a big time saver.

The owners (i assume they are owners as they were so enthusiastic) were the most cheerful and helpful hosts i met during our time in NZ.

Please note, the motel is about 3-4 Km from the town centre, on the highway, but we had no highway noise.

My husband and I and our 1yr old daughter chose this motel cause of the location and the spa..thought it was a wonderful idea to relax after a long drive to Taupo. The Spa was good and relaxing but after our dip we decided to sit around in the living area and watch TV and have some coffee but to our surprise my husband sat on the sofa and he just practically went in! most uncomfortable sofa we'd ever sat on and to top that the electric kettle was filthy and old..(it'l be great to update that kettle and sofa).Another unwelcoming sight was the beddings...obviously needs upgrading and lucky for my daughter i took with us her portable cot and so yeah she was comfortable!
Everything else was good except for an unfriendly looking receptionist.
All in all we slept peacefully that one night we spent there.
I would recommend this motel to my friends but ofcourse with warnings!!
