“Not worth the money”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

My wife and I stayed there in February, 2013 and we were very disappointed. The "lodge" is a home in a very residential section with very limited grounds. The rooms resemble motel rooms. There is no help with luggage. There is NO LAKE VIEW, despite their website claim to the contrary because the trees and shrubs have become very overgrown. There is a bar and a "billiard" room, but no one is there to tend bar and the pool table had miscellaneous "stuff" all over it such as picture frames and boxes. When we arrived, one of the owners, Gary came over to our room with two small glasses of white wine. We had been told we would receive a complimentary drink upon arrival. We were not asked what we would like. The experience was our largest let down in NZ. I don't know who is writing the other reviews on this place...!!

Thank you for your feedback which we take very seriously and I am extremely disappointed to hear your stay wasn't up to your or our expectations. I do notice that your review completely contradicts your comments in our visitors book “Wonderful stay – thank you!” and hope that we haven’t been confused on reflection (as is easy to do after a long trip) with another property.

With regard to the comment that “the rooms resemble motel rooms” I have to say that we continue to maintain the required very strict standards we have always had allowing the 12,000 sq. ft. Lake Taupo Lodge to be consistently assessed as suitable to be a member of the exclusive luxury hospitality consortium, Small Luxury Hotels of the World for 15 straight years.

We always offer assistance with luggage, it is second nature for myself and my staff to do this so I am shocked to hear that it didn't happen in your case. All our rooms have Lake Views – we sit above the lake and our extensive 2.3 acres of land has been landscaped to ensure absolute privacy from properties nearby and is constantly groomed and kept trimmed to give lake, mountain and garden views.

We are small boutique lodging, having a full time barman is not warranted, however myself or one of my staff have always been on hand to assist with any drink requirements guests may have. The pool table is always there as an option for anyone who may like to use it – the visitors books are left there for easy access by guests to browse through or sign at their leisure, it is not a problem to remove them at any time.

You are correct - on arrival our guests are offered a complimentary glass of wine – one of our very good quality house wines. Our glasses are quite large so the pours may have looked small however I can assure you they are never less than the required standard white wine pour of 150 mls. I must extend my apologies here for not asking your preference for red or white, most of our guests in summer seem to have white wine and I was clearly presumptuous on this occasion to bring you white.

We did enjoy having you stay for the one night you had booked and only wish we had known of your concerns at the time - hopefully you may return one day and your perception of our Lodge can be transformed with a longer stay. Safe travels!

Kind Regards
Gary

My husband and i stayed here for two nights and found the home to be modern, luxurious and had spectacular views. The proprietors and another couple who were staying were wonderful company during a gourmet dinner. I would recommend it for travellers who are comfortable with a bed and breakfast type situation. Although you are in someone's home, the owners are not intrusive at all

Winter can be a long and cold affair so my wife and I decided to get away for the weekend and we were so glad we chose Lake Taupo lodge to do it.
With fantastic views, beautifully appointed rooms, and magic hospitality not to mention one of the best breakfasts I've had,we could not have chosen better.
There was only one problem, we were only there for the Weekend.
Can't wait until we get the chance to go back .

We spent Friday Evening at this well appointed Lodge, on entering you step down into a well designed and comfortable Lounge, that has a Grand Piano and glass doors looking out onto the gardens. There is a Bar with a Large Snooker Table and a formal Lounge with simply breathtaking views over Lake Taupo. We were welcomed by Gary and Shirley the owners who spent time to explain the facilities available to us before taking us to our Suite.

The Pines Suite was a delight with a four poster bed draped in soft blue/grey curtains, good storage area for luggage, with a mini bar offering a great selection of wines and well aged port, there was a comfortable sitting area and balcony with topiary trees.

The Bathroom was a pure delight with Lake Views, dual sinks, claw foot bath and a glass walk-in shower that at a touch of a button became a Turkish Steam Bath for two.

The attention to detail in this Suite was exceptional as was the entire Lodge, being beautifully appointed with a modern air of elegance about this guest accommodation.

Evening drinks and Canapes were served, followed by dinner, which was beautiful presented and with perfect balancing of flavours made it a most enjoyable dining experience.

Our bed was a most comfortable experience, rewarding us with a most restful sleep that had me awake refreshed and ready for a days exploring. After a hearty Breakfast of Homemade Museli, Yogurt and fresh fruit, cured meats, followed by a cooked breakfast of Canadian Cured Bacon, Roasted Tomato and pesto stuffed Mushroom with two perfectly cooked poached eggs. .

Before departing I asked Gary if I could see any of the other Guest Accommodations and was shown to the Frank, Lloyd and Wright Suites, separate from the Main Lodge but beautifully appointed with nice furnishing and a unique polished wood panels behind the beds. with seating area and balcony overlooking the lake. These are their lead in rooms lower in price than the main suites but so well designed with hanging space placed behind the bed wall as was the are where Tea and Coffee could be made and a lovely bathroom with underfloor heating, Bath and a Black pebble floor in the shower area which was well I thought really cool.

Next I viewed the Lakes Suite next to our Suite and which had full frontal views over the lake and was decorated to a high standard in a light shade with well appointed wood furniture and lovely bathroom. Finally the Cherrywood which was the largest of the Suite and downstairs with separate sitting room which had opened door to the main bedroom so you can choose to leave open plan or two rooms. There was a large Bathroom and Hallway with service center housing a fridge and tea / coffee making facilities.

We departed feeling well rested and relaxed for our day touring the Tongariro National Park, in picture postcard weather. with snow on Mt Ruapehu only adding to the joy of the day.

If looking for a Lodge experience that has that somewhere special feeling, where you can relax, unwind and welcomed by locals who know what service and attention to detail is all about, then I could not think of a more suitable place than Lake Taupo Lodge and looking forward to my return someday soon.

We stayed at Lake Taupo Lodge for three nights and unfortunately found the experience quite disappointing....The exterior of the Lodge is timeless and the gardens gorgeous, but on entering we found the interiors to be dated and in need of a good stylist. The food was a major disappointment....it appeared the only chef was inexperienced and the food could only be described as budget...chicken tandori scewers followed by icecream the first evening, lamb rack on a bed of curry vegetables, dessert was yoghurt topped with some biscuit crumbs and cream, our last evening the dish was presented as an exotic Turkish dish but was in fact a very poor chicken stir fry with pasta, followed with a bread and butter pudding...biscuits and fruit were not replaced in our room as promised. The Host Garry ran around trying to please everyone whilst his wife was detached and unsupportive ,she showed absolutelny no interest in her guests and made one feel that they were invading her private space, one was reminded of Faulty Towers.Fortunately we were allocated the only room with a view(one room has a view from the bathroom but looks out over the car park)and the Gardens have taken the view from the other rooms with one room next to the common areas and toilet...having paid over $4500.00 for the three nights we do not consider this to be value for money

I would like to respond to your comments:

The style of Lake Taupo Lodge is Art Nouveau. We pride ourselves in keeping within this space.

We also pride ourselves that our chef is approachable. It is unfortunate to find out after your stay that 3 of your 15 meals (5 course dinners) were not to your understanding of quality cuisine. Our experienced chef has a 5 Star international accreditation with meals being unique and discussed with guests if there are any special requirements or requests.

Fruit and homemade biscuits are replaced on a daily basis in each room.

My staff and I pride ourselves on our hospitality and consistently exceed the expectations of our guests.

It is pleasing to know that you enjoyed the spectacular view from your room. We trim the gardens in the autumn and offer views of the gardens, lake and mountains from each room.

It is unfortunate for me to learn of your experience and note from your other reviews on Trip Advisor your questioning of standard. We have had 15 years as members within the international Small Luxury Hotel Group. Our standards are reviewed annually and we consistently achieve a nationally accredited 5 Star Qualmark rating.

Due to some mutual miscommunication we arrived a day early but the owner greeted us warmly and graciously and he did everything he could to make us feel welcome. The Lodge was actually a magnificent home and the room was wonderful, with an outstanding view of Lake Taupo, and had every amenity. This is a very personal and intimate accommodation and you feel more like house guests that paying guests. The food was outstanding. We arrived feeling like customers and left feeling like friends. A wonderful !
