We stayed for three peaceful nights at the Pillars Retreat. Ruth and John greeted us on arrival, made us feel most welcome and thoughfully provided everything we could possibly need in the large and comfortable bedroom. We loved the garden, the views and having the spacious sitting room, with a wood fire, to relax in after a day of sight-seeing. Breakfasts were excellent and we enjoyed talking to the hosts and learning more about the country. Provided that you have a car, the Pillars is a great location for exploring the thermal hot spots of New Zealand.

We stayed for just one night before heading to Waitomo but wished we had booked for longer.
Our generous hosts Ruth and John were extremely welcoming, greeting us with tea upon arrival and great conversation, which made it feel like we were visiting family. This was repeated at breakfast, where we shared a fabulous spread and home from home conversations!
Our only regret is that we stayed for one night. John and Ruth - thank you for such a wonderful stay - we hope to return soon. Craig and Emma

We stayed for just one night in February. This is a lovely place run by extremely friendly and helpful people. Ruth and John made us feel very welcome right from the start and couldn’t do enough to help us (when we arrived we had a problem with our hire car – John immediately offered to jack up the car and fix it for us!). The building itself is lovely and is set in beautiful gardens. There are also little extra touches like a free bottle of wine in your room. Breakfast was great too and we met some really nice other people staying there at the time. The best place we stayed in New Zealand – Highly recommended.

My husband and I stayed at the Pillars for a total of 2 nights. Even though I was taken down with a bad dose of gastro for 24hours.....not from this place I assure you.....it was one on the nicest places we have stayed. Our hosts Ruth and John could not have been nicer. They felt more like family than our hosts. When I was sick they made my husband feel like he was at home. I would highly recommend this place for couples. It is such a beautiful spot and the hosts make it even better.

Having spent a most shocking New Year's eve in New Zealand's version of the Addam's Family household managed by Basil Fawlty (aka The Waitomo Caves Hotel), my wife and I were praying that our next stop would provide a more acceptable standard of accommodation. Obviously fate looked kindly upon us that day, because we spotted an entry for The Pillars (Taupo) in the AA NZ accommodation guide. By definition, I am always dubious of the photos and descriptions of "paradise on earth" associated to establishments advertised in guides such as that one. However, I must admit I was taken a back by the sheer energy and friendliness of the owner, John Boddy, when he answered the phone. Even that, did not prepare us for the welcome we received. John and his wife, Ruth, have this innate gift to make you feel happy and at home 10 seconds after you cross the threshold of their home even if you are tired and miserable looking (and trust me, on that day, we were!). The house has on its design some of the over-the-top glamour of a Beverly Hills villa, but do not be fooled, the people inhabiting this dwelling are the most down to earth, heart warming, helpful, friendly, interesting and welcoming that I have seen for many a year. We spent only one night there and I just did not want to leave! So, would I recommend it, you bet! The only thing I may come to regret is that, if too many people discover it, they may not have any rooms available for us when we go back!

We could find no fault at all with this B&B.
The accommodation was excellent, well furnished ,spotlessy clean , modern and elegant with lots of little extras.
The grounds were beautifully kept and spacious with great views.
The breakfast was first class and very nicely served in a lovely dining room.
The hosts John and Ruth could not have been more helpful and attentive, nothing was too much trouble for them.
We are recommendingv this place to as many people as possible , it is wonderful.

The PIllars was one of our favorite lodgings during our month-long visit to NZ for many reasons. First -- our hosts. John and Ruth Boddy were, to us, all that is great about New Zealanders. They were warm, welcoming and very helpful throughout our stay. Upon arrival, we were welcomed and given snacks and drinks. We were made to feel like old friends who had come for a visit. (While we were there, another couple from the US were staying there who had stayed there several times previously. It is the kind of place I would like to visit again and again.)

Second -- the place. John and Ruth have created a beautiful villa-type setting on a 5-acre garden estate, with a pool. Our immaculate room was spacious with a balcony and a comfortable king-sized bed appointed with beautiful linens. Ruth herself made most of the bed linens and draperies throughout the house. The bathroom was spotless with full amenities (shampoo, bath products, hair dryer). There were set ups for tea and coffee and the room had beer, water, fruit and a bottle of wine.

The outdoor spaces are simply beautiful, with lanais and porches surrounded by incredible gardens which they keep up themselves. I took a long ramble around the garden with my camera and got some great photos.

Breakfasts were plentiful with savories, breakfast breads, fruit salads, homemade yogurt, cereals, coffee, tea and fruit juice. John and Ruth joined their guests for breakfast and we had a wonderful time in the mornings with them and their other guests, sharing adventures and advice.

Since we were staying there for several days, I had asked about where to do laundry and Ruth simply took it from me and it was all done, waiting for me when we got back that evening.

Since the Pillars is outside the actual town area, you will need a car to access restaurants and the local sights. However, it was well worth the drive to stay at such a beautiful place.
