“Great Place to stay”
Reviewed May 31, 2007

Bunks are nice, decent amount of space in the rooms, kitchen is a great size and clean with the staff coming in regularly to keep on top of the cleaning, really nice patio area outside, separate building with TV lounge and they even have a sauna.
Run by people who used to be backpackers so they seem pretty on the ball. Good location, they are telling the truth when they say it's a 10 minute walk to the town centre.
They give great advice and you can hire bikes from them.
A little tired in places but overall was a good place to stay.

Enjoyed Rainbow Lodge when we stayed there in Jan 2007.

We booked for a couple of nights then stayed an extra night when we arrived and saw that it was a great hostel.

Our room was a double ensuite with a TV and a little patio area outside!

The accommodation is very well run and they have loads to do for all travellers, young or older. It's also in a lovely spot just outside of the main centre of Taupo with superb views as you walk down to the lake.

I stayed at this hostel for 3 nights and enjoyed every minute. It was soooo nice and chilled out and the staff were so friendly. Sarah even offered me a cup of tea whilst I used the internet !! The rooms are lovely - I shared a 4bed ensuite dorm which even came equipped with a hairdryer - sheer luxury after staying in sub standard hostels for 3 and half months. I really didn't want to leave !! If you are planning to stay in Taupo YOU MUST stay here!

Rainbow Lodge is a really well-run hostel. When i checked in, they had me in a mixed gender small dorm, but when I requested a single sex room, they juggled everybody to get me a single-sex room. I mean, it was above and beyond what I would expect from a busy hostel! There are also little signs everywhere saying that if anything is amiss to let the staff know ASAP -- you really feel like they tried hard to keep everything running well.

I had a bed in a triple dormitory, with a window that faced the sun deck. I was initially concerned about noise, but they chase everyone off the deck about 10 or 11pm at night (by turning off the exterior lights) and shoo people to the picnic tables near the laundry or to the enormous common / dining / kitchen area. There's a big ol' gas grill in the covered picnic area. There's a laundry room, and a land line phone that isn't a pay phone that anyone can use (much cheaper for phone card calls).

Rainbow Lodge was one of the cleaner hostels I've stayed in. The kitchen was spic and span every evening, which encouraged people to keep it clean at other times as well, the sheet and duvet cover were freshly laundered between guests (you make your own bed), and there's good ventilation in the showers and bathrooms (e.g., not moldy) -- also, the shared female showers had crazy water pressure, which was wonderful after the 18.5km Tongario Crossing. There's also a sauna (free before 10pm, $2 afterward)!

The only drawback was that it was a hike out of the main shopping / eating area (which made it quieter, too). It was probably like 7 minutes to the big grocery stores, and 15 to the waterfront (the part with the restaurants). The Magic Bus doesn't stop at Rainbow Lodge, but it stops at Burkes' Backpackers, which is 1 minute away. Internet at Rainbow Lodge itself is kind of expensive, but there is a internet cafe 7 minutes away that will give you super cheap access if you show them your room key.

I would stay here again, especially if I were driving around NZ as they have (free) off-street parking in back.

We stayed at the Rainbow Lodge on April 5th, 2006 in a double ensuite room. We booked directly with the lodge for NZ $55. A key deposit of NZ $10 cash was required when we arrived and refunded when we dropped back off the key. The lodge staff was very friendly. There were many common areas and secured parking in back. The room was extremely clean and quite comfortable.
