“Great food, not sure about the room”
Reviewed April 3, 2012

The hotel is about 4km outside the town, in a very narrow strip between the main road and the lakeside path. Consequently it is long and narrow, both of the accomodation "arms" being two storeys high and one room deep. So one side of the room opens onto the carpark and road (the main road within 40 feet of the room door at our end of the hotel), the other onto the lake with great views.

Having read other reviews we had specifically asked for a first floor room when our booking was made 5 months before our stay and one was not available when we arrived. We did not feel very secure in our ground floor room as passers by walked directly past the front and the back doors (the lakeside path is less than 10 feet away - and they do look in!), and the room is full of warnings about closing the curtains, locking up, etc etc. The room was quite dark, only having windows on the lakeside. Security considerations (and the hotel's own guidance) meant we could only use airconditioning for cooling, a bit noisy at night but inefficient when on quiet mode. The road noise was also disturbing.

It was comfortable though. Staff were very friendly, and the restaurant is excellent - we ate dinner there twice (not cheap but a nice treat). Breakfast is expensive, although a good spread - if you are hungry go for it, we found we needed very little lunch after that which probably compensated for the cost.

I don't think I would go back there unless I was guaranteed a first floor room, and I would want to be at the end of the hotel which is on the "fatter" bit of land so that I was slightly farther from the road. However if your main concern is walking out of your room straight onto the lakeside, this is the place for you.

Room Tip: If you share our security concerns or want a window open, insist on a first floor room. Also ask fo...

Dear Linzini - I do appreciate you taking the time to write of the good and not so good. Yes I can understand you would be disappointed about privacy on the lake edge ground floor when you specifically asked for first floor. Unfortunately I can not research why you were not granted your request becauses of the privacy of your details. Guest satisfaction is absolute priority to us and we will do whatever, whenever to ensure this. Please accept my sincere apologies for this case. I am happy you did experience our dining - we are proud of of long standing excellent reputation for quality and service in Edgewater and Beach Brasserie.
A personal contact with next booking will guarantee a room on first floor.
Kind regards
Diane

The hotel is by the lake side about 2 miles from town, the room was great with patio to sit on and enjoy the magnificent view across the lake.Swimming pool was more like a hot bath. Restaurant had good quality food but we tended to eat in town, breakfast good with lots of choice. You can walk along path beside the lake into town & if you go into the lake at key points the water is hot at feet and cold on top wierd. From the town you can also walk along the river to Huka Falls a really powerful falls being channelled through a small gap. On the way you can bathe in a small bay in the river that is fed by hot spring.

Room Tip: If you choose ground floor room you get the best outlook and patio.

Our accommodation at the Millenium Hotel on Lake Taupo was excellent. Very good location and very comfortable.
Pleasant 35 minute walk around the lake to the main shopping area. Our lake view room had a balcony with chairs/table.
The hotel has a nice restaurant.
Also, friends suggested the Vine Eatery and Scenic Cellars for lunch in Lake Taupo and we had a most enjoyable meal there.

We arrived a little early, before our room was ready, and the reception staff were most helpful in refrigerating medication for me in their refrigerator until the room was ready. We also ahd an AirNew Zealand upgrade voucher which they were happy to honour and the room we got was fantastic. The food was excellent in both the restaurants we ate at. We'd highly recommend Manuel's to anyone.

Manuels Hotel is well located on the lake front with only a public footpath separating the ground floor rooms from the water. The majority of the rooms face the lake and all seem to be spacious. There is a lift to the upper floor but it is not very obvious.

We were greeted well and taken to our room. I have to say we did not enjoy our stay because of the room which either had to be lit artificially or, with the wooden slats open, had no privacy. Even some net curtains would have helped. Our room, 614, is one of three that faced the swimming pool and I think one of the 6 or 7 rooms that have no lake view. The room was clean, the bed comfortable and the pillows satisfactory. There was a small step running across the room which might be of concern to some people. If you want to step out of your room into the swimming pool, fine. The security bolt on the door to the pool was missing although there was a chain which did give some reassurance.

Eating is a delight with both the Edgewater fine dining restaurant and the Brasserie having lovely lake views. We would have liked a pot of tea at breakfast but at least the water from the urn was piping hot when making a cup of tea.

The hotel is located some distance from the shops - Taupo straggles along the highway for some distance.

Room Tip: Make sure you have a lake view and upstairs for privacy and security.

Dear admiral44 - thank you for taking the time to write this fedback and I really do appreciate your constructive suggestions re the poolside privacy of those particular rooms. We find these rooms requested by regulars who want to be by the pool, however, as you have commented lakeview rooms are by far the first choice when staying here. Very pleased you enjoyed dining here we do pride ourselves on our reputation and quality. Hope to see you return in the future.

We stayed for 2 nights. The staff were very helpful & friendly. Our room was very large with a huge super king bed & over looked the pool. The pool was divine, so warm. The room was spotless. The bar & restuarant all had lakeside views.

Having spent a week staying in relatively self-contained units, it was somewhat confining to find ourselves in a small hotel room again with no kitchenette, etc. However, the location at the lakeside is excellent and it was good to relax with a pre-dinner glass of wine, cheese, nibbles and some gentle music (c/ iPod & speakers) on the little balcony overlooking the lake. Dinner was similarly enjoyable. The hotel is located a little out of town, so you'll probably need a car and it may be a good thing to not be in the throbbing heart of Taupo but rather, just visit.

Room Tip: if you're in Taupo, it has to be a lakeside room.

Dear GlobalRover - it was nice to read that we were able to spoil you a little while you were here- it is different in a hotel room I know - can be great to just relax and enjoy your time without preparing your own food etc for a treat.
Thank you for sharing your experience and hopefully we will welcome you back one day.
