“Pure force and wonder of nature.”

The difference between the low and the high water is astonishing and how fast it fills up was pretty cool. Got some great before and after photos

“You must go.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 20, 2012 via mobile

It's free and breathtaking. Make sure to take photos of the downstream area before the dam opens because the rise in water is astonishing. Be there at least 5 mins before the opening (opens 1000, 1200, 1400 & 1600 summer) to pick your spot. If you keep a good look out you may see trout swimming in the crystal clear water before the opening and watch the Fantails whipping around when the water is flowing catching the little bugs. A lovely spot.

“A nice family walk”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 17, 2012

The rapids are not far from Huka falls so you can easily do both in a morning or afternoon. They usually open the dam at 10, 12 and 2 each day, however for maintenance reasons the dam was continuously open when we visited. This is a shame for my recollection is that watching the dam open and seeing the river rise is half the fun. However the kids all enjoyed the walk to the various look out points, and our 4 year old coped fine with the 10min walk. This is a great free morning or afternoon activity on a pleasant day.

“what an experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2012

Aim to get there in plenty of time to get a good viewing place from one of the several platforms. The top one has a few bushes getting in the way if you are planning on taking photos. The middle one is good. Check out the pool at the bottom of the dam after the gates have shut. You may be lucky enough to see some massive trout! An abundance of tui in the kowhai & some Australian coot trying to build a nest on one of the floats in the lake.
