While vacationing in the Taupo area, my husband and I spent a day on the Whanganui River flyfishing with Shane. Traveling from North America, we chose to leave our gear at home. This was no problem as Shane can supply all the gear and equipment needed. After getting us into our boots and waders, Malcolm from Tongariro Quads set each of us up with a bike and helmet for the hour-long trek into this awesome wilderness.
The fact that it has been a few years since either of us have done any flyfishing did not matter to Shane. He was patient and supportive and made us feel at ease. He’s a terrific teacher. His tips and techniques really made a difference in getting the fly in front of the fish.
We spent 5-6 hours on the river, making our way upstream from pool to pool. Midway we stopped for a very tasty lunch that Shane provided.
As fishing always goes, we landed a few, lost a few, and will be talking for a long time about the ones that got away. We count ourselves lucky to have had this experience. I have to add that spending a day surrounded by lush foliage where the only signs of life were us, the fish and some waterfowl, while listening to the sounds of the river and a fly line whizzing through the air, was a nature-lover’s dream. It just doesn’t get any better than that!
We could not be more pleased about our entire experience with Shane. He’s passionate; patient; knowledgeable, of both the sport and the river; dedicated; flexible; adaptable; a good coach; and safety is paramount. He truly loves the sport, and strives for you to have your best day ever on the water. Now that’s a great guide.
