This was probably one of the absolute best experiences. Walking around the crater and looking at the rising steam, listening to the fizzing and hissing sound, smelling the sulfur in the air, feeling some of the warmth dissipating upward, looking at and listening to the boiling mud was an amazing and uncommon experience.
I had had a somewhat similar experience in Akureyri, Iceland. The difference here is that there is greenery all around on the ground. Here you can actually see the edges of the crater where the earth is split.
This is one way to experience what it might have been like when our earth was being formed.
This is a great experience for parents of school-age children. But, most importantly, this is just an incredible place to enjoy.
Fantastic board walk all the way around so young old and wheelchair people can enjoy. Every minute was different depending wind.
Well kept park area, even in the rain we still enjoyed the beauty of the park. Make sure you stay on the track because even from a distance, you can feel the heat. It's well marked and maintained so it's a safe walk. Not crowded so got to take in the surroundings at our own pace.
Great to be able to walk through this steaming and bubbling site. It was fascinating to see just how powerful nature is.
Flat walking along well laid boardwalks made exploring the steam vents and i would recommend doing the "look-out loop". The view of Ruapehu across the hills and lake is amazing, especially with the field of steaming vents in front of you
A nice pleasant walk but a bit disappointed as hardly any bubbling craters and wanted to see these. The walk was a bit expensive.
