The inimiate dining experience and attentive staff were excellent. The ambience of the candles and the wood fire made the whole dining very memorable. Trevor certainly knows his wines and we had the most delicious meal washed down with a great Sacred Hill 2008. YUM!

The food was very good with our group having the pork entree and scallop entree. And yes the scallop dish did only have two scallops and they weren't flavor some. Rescued a bit by the accompaniments. Pork however was delicious. Mains - steak fabulous Taupo beef. My only comment is the inability to cook a steak rare. Medium rare was delivered. Simon you need to teach your staff the difference at this level. Wine list good with some very nice options. Usual grizzle about not enough by the glass. Service wasn't really at a five star level and needs sharpening up all round.

Otherwise a great location and the fire in the bar fabulous.

If you're from a warmer climate like I am... seat yourself next to one of the warm fireplaces and prepare yourself for some of the best service and dessert menu's that NZ has to offer. The service was very attentive and professional - nothing was a problem for staff and their recommendations from the menu kept my tastebuds wanting more. I was flying solo and only in the adjoining Hilton Hotel for 3 nights so unfortunately I didn't get the chance to try *everything*... but I'll be back for more next time. Just another reason to visit this "Top Town"!

Dined at bistro lago Saturday 8 Sept. in a group of 13 , it was a reunion . A set menu was agreed upon only to be informed on arrival that the options had changed . Never mind , should be ok . I and others ordered the scallops with crispy cauliflower , I didn't mind that the serving consisted of just two scallops , they were well cooked and plump . Too bad for non-shellfish eaters , wait for your main . Next came the shoulder of lamb , a grey , unappetizing mass glued to the plate with a dehydrated smudge of gravy . It was left almost undisturbed and along with other half eaten offerings removed from the table . At this point I would have thought the maitre'd might be alarmed , alas no response . Glancing around the table I noticed that the bread and butter pudding was left untouched in a stodgy heap . Our waitress was pleasant enough but hasnt in her two months at the restaurant met Simon Gault , It's time he paid a visit and tuned the operation up , I love it when he does that on Masterchef . The dinner was set at $80 pp , wine /drinks etc additional .

This great restaurant has american style quality and friendly service - not something you find in New Zealand so often! The menu was brilliant, and the wine menu was amazing. We had the special of water buffalo, very interesting and delicious.
