“Fantastic place to stay”
Reviewed November 5, 2011

We stayed for a couple of nights, the room, toilets and kitchen facilities were super clean and tidy!!! The park had a great friendly atmosphere and the staff went above and beyond to make our weekend relaxing and easy. Would HIGHLY recommend :)

This place is very well-organized. The toilet was clean. The kitchen was very well-equipped with even pots, pans and cutlery provided, makes it more convenient and easy for us to prepare our meals instead of doing it in our motorhome, which was rather compact.
The BBQ area was good. We had a great time barbecuing there too.

This is a simple holiday park which is few km out of town with views over the lake. The communal facilities were good despite a large number of people camping overnight.

This place is about 4km out of the main centre of Taupo. It is run by a very stuffy couple, who we didn't find friendly or helpful. They are pretty uptight about everything! You have to display a parking permit on your car... who else would want to park there, I don't know! The heater in your room is on a timer - not a bad idea, except it only lasts about 15 minutes, so if you are sitting in there, you are up and down all the time. There were only 2 electricity sockets in the room. And there were rules pasted up everywhere. The male manager was very rude to my friend when she asked about booking the spa - he told her the rates etc (yes, you have to pay!), and she said she would think about it and come back within 30 minutes to tell him. When she went back to say we wouldn't use it, he said 'good for you, because I was going to double book you anyway'!

Oh, and the pillows are like those hospital ones which are covered in plastic!! And the sheets were threadbare.

This is a simple New Zealand holiday park. We stayed in a delux cabin (which means it had it’s own toilet and sink – but only public showers). It was very good value. What I especially liked here was that the public areas (showers & kitchen) were all in good shape and clean. The owners were also friendly to deal with. Like most of the holiday parks and motels in NZ this one had a small fridge, some dishes, and a kettle. Our cabin also had a bunk (double bottom, single top), a couch, a small table & 2 chairs and a small deck. The only complaint we have is that like almost all places we stayed in NZ there are no screens on the windows – so when it’s hot & you need to open the windows then the bugs fly in. We’d stay here again.

The Great Lakes Holiday Park is in need of one big spring clean- the toilets/bathrooms were really dirty and reeked of vomit, the kitchen was also very dirty and smelly but on the plus side it didn't smell of vomit.. We went into the kitchen to cook up a midnight snack but unfortunately we couldn't as there were about 10 people sleeping on the floor. They'd also strung all their laundry across the kitchen. The sight of some randoms tatty old undies strung across the room put me off my food anyway. Loads of dishes left everywhere but not surprising as they don't supply dishwashing liquid. They've obviously had a few cases of gastro here as they have warning signs EVERYWHERE. I'm not surprised at all. This place was feral and I couldn't wait to leave and get home for a shower. It's a real shame as the owner we met was an absolute delight- she just needs to fire her cleaners and tell people that kitchens are for cooking in not for sleeping.. At $34 a night for a tent site it was a complete rip off.
The Top 10 Holiday Park where we stayed last time we went to Taupo was so much cleaner, closer to town and better value for money. We will stay there from now on.
