The night we went was very cold outside,so what a lovely welcome when we opened the Door.
Lovely and warm with most tables taken, ( which is a good sign,) Although they were quite busy we did not have to wait long to be served. I had the fish which was nice. My wife had the pork belly
which she said was bit dry. We had a bottle of their own label red wine quite nice.
Most of the people left before us,so the waitress turn off a heater, Brr. She did put it on again for us.

Had a lovely evening meal here. The food was great & prices included veg etc. ( not the case everywhere!). The staff, despite issues with the wet weather, were lovely.
Note: if you get a booklet from the Tourist Office you can get a free drink with every main meal

We stayed one night in Taupo en route to Auckland from Wellington. This was the Friday after Anzac Day, and it seemed a lot of folk had used the opportunity of a four day weekend and the Indian summer weather, to get away. ( Taupo accomodation and eateries were full (or maybe its always like this, such a lovely place).
We found 'the crooked door' at 8.30pm on our third blockie, just as we were resigning ourselves to fast food.
The owner was so pleasant and welcoming; despite an almost full house he took time to chat and found us a quiet booth...'...take your time, feel at home' he said, and we did.
We selected from a number of different types of seafood and styles of preparation to make up a generous shared platter, and a bottle of local wine recommended by the friendly waitress. And feeling mellow, we ended up with desserts to share. Unfortunately, they don't do breakfast!

Great to find such hospitality in a relatively small town, and yet another impressive night for us in New Zealand. We'll be back.

Went for dinner last night. Food experience mixed. Fish dish was good and generous. Pork belly was generous in size but undercooked and therefore tough and pretty dry. Service was very fast, perhaps a little too fast - much food precooked and reheated? Wine list is slim and only a few by the glass. Patronage while we're there was low - better choices around town for a good meal?

Whenever we visit Taupo we know where to go for seafood. As a matter of fact, 3 years ago they cooked my fresh caught trout.
This restaurant lends new meaning to the words, 'cozy, informal atmosphere'.
The fish is always fresh, well-cooked and lots of it. And the chocolate dessert ain't too bad either.
The staff are old timers in the business who seem to really enjoy their work, as well as chatting with the customers.
The wine is also excellent and reasonable.
