“Great property and lovely hosts”
Reviewed May 30, 2012

We spent a lovely couple of nights with Gail and Robert and 'the boys', including sharing a delicious meal with them and their delightful friends. This was the relaxing part of our holiday and the generous, well appointed room with its own sitting area was the perfect spot to sit and read or take in the views. Gail and Robert understand what makes a great B&B, and the purpose built property has just the right mix of private and common areas. We loved that it is such a quiet and peaceful spot and yet only minutes from town. We'll definitely be back.

We had an amazing time staying at Kauri Point. Not only were Gail and Robert fabulous hosts. Their knowlege of local eateries made eating out easy! Gail has perfected poaching eggs and breakfast every morning was simply the best. Our room was large, comfortable and clean, the decor modern and cosy much nicer than any of the hotels on the main strip with the added bonus of excellent friendly hosts! The house itself was beautiful with stunning views of the country side and less than a 10 minute drive into town! We really couldn't have asked for a better place to stay and have been highly recommending Kauri Point to all our friends since returning home. Gail and Robert made us feel totally at home and we look forward to returning to Kauri Point next time we decide to come up to Taupo!

Room Tip: Rooms with access onto the deck are large and sunny

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here with the most perfect hosts Rob and Gail. We had endless fun with "Busten and Arnie". We were made to feel very much at home here. Rob and Gail made us feel very welcome and we really enjoyed their company when we shared a meal with them and bottle or two? of wine. This is a perfect place to stay. The rooms are most comfortable the bed is king size and the shower room is excellent. Our stay here really was "the jewel in the crown" of our holiday. We cannot wait to return.

We were welcomed at the door by Gail who made us extremely welcome with offerings of wine. Our room was large and well appointed with super king sized bed, TV, lounge chairs and plenty of room in the bathroom. Gail's local knowledge was extensive and helpful. Away from the noise of Taupo's hotel strip, a busy road at the best of times, we were able to enjoy an excellent night's sleep.
Breakfast was excellent with a choice of pretty much whatever one could wish for including fresh fruit, and a selection of cereals followed by a choice of cooked options very nicely cooked and presented.
The commercial espresso machine will certainly please coffee aficionados.

We arrived at Kauri Point and were immediately welcomed by Gail and Robert, who gave us cocktails and introduced us to their other guests out on the deck. The evening was delightful, with Robert providing a magnificent barbecue feast and a great group discussion round the table. Taupo was one of our favourite locations in New Zealand and with a beautiful room and a fantastic location and there could not be a better place to stay than at Kauri Point.

We very much enjoyed our stay with Gail and Rob at Kauri Point - our room was comfortable and spacious and the shower was the best we have had in NZ!! Gail and Rob made us feel part of their family and we enjoyed the breakfasts chatting to our hosts and meeting their friends. Upon arrival we were made to feel completely welcome with a couple of glasses of wine on the decking. The rooms were self contained with everything provided and a small kitchenette for communal use on the landing. A fridge for our wine was very important to us! Kauri Point is a short drive to Taupo where there are numerous places to eat and Gail will advise and book for you. The Tongariro crossing was on our list and although bad weather was forecast Gail and Rob encouraged us to go anyway and do a short walk - it turned out to be a lovely day and we did the majority of the walk because of their enthusiasm.

My wife and I and another couple recently stayed with Robert and Gail at Kauri point for three nights. We were travelling from Russell in the Bay of Islands so the trip to Taupo was long and tiring. Because of this we decided to ask Gail if she would mind cooking up something for our dinner the first night and she came up with a magnificent three course dinner which any good restaurant would find hard to match. Smoked trout mousse for starters, quiche and salad for main course and a magnificent and unusual pavlova for dessert. What more could four hungry Australians want? We provided a couple of bottles of Central Otago wine which served to wash down the meal beautifully!

I understand from Gail that some guests have complained that the location of the B&B is too far out of town. This, in my opinion, is not a problem as it only takes 5-7 minutes to drive from the B&B into Taupo on an excellent road. Sure you cannot see Lake Taupo, but you can see Mount Tauhara, a dormant volcano in all its glory. As well there is something to be said for being away from the noise of a busy highway.

The B&B itself is excellent and well laid out. All the guest rooms open onto an expansive patio area which overlooks a lovely garden stretching towards the mountain. The guest rooms are large and all have separate en-suites. Breakfast were excellent with Gail being prepared to cook anything you wanted. I even had the rest of the pavlova for breakfast!

All in all an excellent B&B well worth the cost. If you want quality, then this is it!
