I booked here after hearing some of the other places located right on the main street of Taupo were subjected to excess noise from the pubs and clubs. This place is still in a great position with just a short few minutes walk into town. The room we got was clean, had a TV and great little ensuite. The staff were very helpful and friendly.

I really enjoyed my two weeks staying in a four bed share room. The single beds are a welcome change from squeaky bunks and super comfy, the room I had was warm and the en-suite facilities kept clean every day. The kitchen is huge as is the very comfy DVD lounge. The staff here really go out of their way to make you feel at home, super friendly and always smiling, they clearly enjoy their jobs! And I enjoyed Taupo, so much to do and such a beautiful setting, especially viewed from the upstairs BBQ deck, loved it!!!

Just stayed here for one night. Nice clean rooms with no bunk beds, all en-suite, extra showers, a lovely TV room, a big and clean kitchen with places to eat and hang out, and very friendly and helpful staff: without their advice I wouldn't have had the amazing experience of the Tongarino Alpine Crossing. One complaint, and one complaint only: the room was very cold (though it was midwinter) even with the meagre heater on. Luckily they provided extra blankets but it was freezing when I got out of bed! Nonetheless I'd stay again if in Taupo.

We checked in as 2nd part of a class for a night in Taupo. About 15 of us, with 6 of us reaching the backpackers first. The lady at the reception (can't remember her name, sorry!) was very friendly! She got us to sign in, gave us the keys and showed us around quickly as we had to go somewhere else after! The place was very clean, we had 7 to a room, all single beds, not bunked! There were extra blankets, linen etc all provided for. Staff (and gardener with her labelled buckets - don't take her buckets!) were amazing, friendly. Definitely enjoyed my time there!

However, having a sensitive nose I realised the room was a bit dusty.. or maybe I was just coming down with a cold...

We only stayed here for one night, but it seemed like a great hostel. The rooms were clean and huge and the kitchen spacious and clean. We wished we could stay longer and use the nice kitchen.

The Blackcurrant Backpackers was a very nice hostel. We stayed in a five person co-ed dorm. There were no bunks; it was a spacious room with shelving, a counter and a sink along the wall. We also had a bathroom attached (it was shared with the dorm next door). All of the beds were made-up with clean sheets and there were extra comforters on shelves in the room.

The kitchen, which was across a courtyard from the dorms, was well-maintained. There was a t.v lounge downstairs from the kitchen; we did not end up using it, but it looked nice. The manager was helpful in getting us checked in late and checked out early.

It was a pretty good location, about half way between Huka Falls and the Spa Park. Both of these locations and the lake were convenient driving distance, but you could not have walked to any of them.

My only complaint was that the heater in the room did very little, so it was freezing at night (I slept in a down jacket). But other than that, it was a great stay.
