We stayed in a private ensuite room, which was enormous. Lovely bathroom and the fridge was a nice touch. The garden and kitchen were great too and it's very conveniently located for town. Nicer than many motels we stayed in for twice the price! The staff were incredibly friendly, beyond helpful and really couldn't do enough. Unfortunately we had a woman in the room next door who enjoyed wearing heels and her tramping up and down the walkway quite late made sleep difficult.

We stayed one night in Taupo during the RWC2011. We stayed as a couple at Blackcurrant backpackers and we were really glad with our stay. We had a private room with ensuite bathroom. The room had 2 queen beds. Everything was clean, including the bathroom!
The only things that could be improved is the TV. The room had the oldest TV I had ever seen (for real). I am sure it was older than me (27) and it was not really working... So I would just toss it.
The host was really welcoming and easy going, which is always appreciated!
If you stay in Taupo and would like a low key ambiance, go there, you won't be disappointed and your wallet neither.

Only stayed here for one night but we left wishing we could stay longer. Had a double ensuite room which was huge! Very modern. Nicely decorated and furnished - small table and chairs, dresser etc. Had sliding patio doors out onto the balcony. Ensuite was also big with a large shower. All were very clean - towels provided. Kitchen was ok size and well equipped.
Staff were friendly and helpful. The guy on reception when we first arrived was very helpful. Our room wasn't ready for check in when we arrived as we had left as early as possible from our previous hostel in rotorua bcos it was so horrible. He explained that there had been a major gas leak and that they might be ordered to switch off their hot water before we could check in. When we explained that we hadn't showered at our previous hostel bcos it was soo dirty (cactus jacks) he quickly showed us to the showers and told us to use them before we checked in. As it turned out, they didn't have to switch off the hot water - but it was a nice gesture and good customer service.

I stayed here in Oct 2011 with my partner in an ensuite room, on our way through from Wellington to Auckland. The room was spacious with a double and a single bed in the room. The room was clean, could do with some new duvet covers, valances on the beds (pet hate!!) and a new lamp as the lamp was all cracked and broken. The shower had a little mould around the seals which looked like it needed a good scrub. Other than this the room was perfectly adaquite for a 1 night stay, and I would definately stay here again if I needed a place for a night or 2 on the way through Taupo. It even had a fridge and a TV.
The dorm rooms looked nice as they don't have bunks but single beds instead. The kitchen was a really nice sunny spot upstairs, and there was a lovely garden area in the middle of the blocks of rooms which had a few chairs and tables. Would be nice in summer as they have a BBQ on the deck too.
The location is also good as it is about 3-4 blocks away from the bars/clubs, nice and quiet.

Room Tip: All the rooms looked ok, was nice having our own bathroom in the ensuite room

This was the last hostel I stayed in in NZ, and what a wonderful note to end on.

The dorms don't have bunk beds, meaning the place never feels too crowded and the rooms don't get too noisy. Secondly, everything is kept sparkling clean. Thirdly, the kitchen area is huge and perfectly designed for meeting fellow travellers.

The whole place is carefully thought out to make everything as pleasant as possible for the guests - the courtyard area makes for a homely feel; the rooms are well away from the communal areas meaning that noise is kept to a minimum; and the balcony allows people to congregate around the barbecue.

But by far the most important ingredient is the staff: I've very rarely experienced such consistent and genuine helpfulness from hostel workers. They clearly love their jobs and care passionately about the place and its guests. They even went out of their way to help me with hitchhiking and other more unusual requests for information.

I've stayed in many, many places in the world, and very few match or surpass this hostel.

Only one complaint: the internet was expensive. This is standard across most of NZ, but if some are now able to offer free access, it would be nice if others followed suit, like in most of the world! Still, everything else about this hostel was perfect so for once, and only once in NZ, I will give this hostel full marks despite this annoyance.

(PS I heard a rumour the management may install bunks in order to get more people in - please, please don't do this! You will ruin a fantastic atmosphere.)

Room Tip: The dorms are so good there's no point taking a private!

we stayed in a double ensuite. It was a great place at a reasonable price! Room was neat and tidy. Henry was so welcoming and passionate. Kitchen and comment area was spacious and well-equip. Also, park n save and count down were just near by. Last but not least, nice lake view! Overall, it iwas a great place, but pity that we only stayed there for 1 night.
