“Lovely family motel, welcoming”
Reviewed March 15, 2014

Stayed one night after long drive from Auckland, owners couldn't have been more welcoming and lovely, nothing too much trouble, we had a two bedroomed apartment with good facilities, fine for one night. Our room was on ground floor behind stairs and looked onto pool.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking pool ok but nice to see the Lake

The motel is well situated with views from the front units over Lake Taupo. We had an upstairs one bedroom unit with a view and a workable kitchen, and a ground floor studio unit at the back, which had access from the room to the outdoor pool area and bbq. The pool looked like it needed a major clean, so that wasn't available even if we wanted it. The one bedroom unit was nice, with the queen bed in the main living/kitchen area, and two single beds in the bedroom. The facilities in the studio unit for tea and toast making were very cramped. However, we found the units clean, the beds comfortable, and the lady at reception very helpful. We thought the units were adequate for the price paid.

We were disgusted to find dozens of tiny dead insects resting on the tissue box which was mounted onto the toilet wall. When we informed the receptionist, she gave a cold response saying that it won't bite us! However, she did come to the room to clean out the insects. The hair dryer was also blowing out a few tiny insects.

She advised us to keep the windows closed because of the insects but there was no fan or air conditioning in the room.

When we scrolled down the kitchen blind, we saw flattened insects stuck on it which was just appalling!

We get very few negative comments so we were surprised to receive this one which is a bit unfair. I agree with your comments about the insects on the roller blind. I check all the rooms personally and the fault is all mine, I put my hand up for that. But as to poor cleanliness, perhaps you should read some of the other reviews. Over the summer period we are extremely busy and often people want to check in early and before we have had time to check the units. This is an typical example of what can happen. The insects in question are known as Lake flies (Caddis flies), perfectly harmless. They are quite bad this year but fortunately they have a short life cycle and these swarms are only of a few weeks duration. We can clean a room and even if all the windows are shut tight the little critters can squeeze in somehow and we find them on the windowsills the next day. We try our best to keep up with the problem but we slipped up this time. We do provide fans as required. It is mentioned in our compendium. You could have asked at the office and we would have delivered one to your room.

We stayed two nights at this hotel, and never again. Our first night was in a ground floor room which was very noisy, due to heavy trucks on the road during the night, we woke many times.
I complained to the owner the following morning, so she gave us another room at the back of the hotel which was very nice, with little noise from the road.
This morning, we went to meet a friend for breakfast at 9 am and knew that we had to be back at the hotel for check out before 11 am. Just as my son and I were about to get into the car from town, to go back to check out and give back the key, the owner was standing outside my car asking me why I went off without paying....
My gosh, I felt so humiliated that he had come to look for us, assuming that we had left without paying. He even asked me to drive slowly because he was going to follow me back to the hotel.
I settled the bill and shared my feelings regarding his stupidity and I left after he then joked about this.
Around an hour later, I was stopped by the police, yes, the police. The mad owner had reported me to the police and told them I was on the run .. Anyway, I showed the police my receipt and explained, and even the police laughed with me. When checking into any hotel, we must give all our details like car reg, telephone number, address etc. The owner I think must suffer from paranoia, so please, think twice before staying here. We have stayed at many Taupo hotels, between six to ten times a year and we have NEVER had an issue like this. These owners didn't have the decency to let the police know that we had actually been back at the hotel since 10.45 and paid.....

Room Tip: Don't ever stay in a ground or low floor lake view room..

There are often two sides to a story.
We apologised at the time and apologise again for this fiasco, but we think you didn’t help your situation by your own actions.

A) Credit card numbers declined
B) Didn’t communicate with us with regard to later check-out or that you were returning later.
C) Room empty of guests’ possessions
D) Empty hair dye container in waste basket (changing appearance perhaps?)
E) Didn’t advise office of departure or hand in key
F) No mobile number
G) No vehicle in carpark

With all things considered we naturally assumed that we had the modus operandi of a guest that had left without intending to pay. We then rang the police.

With the benefit of hindsight we might have handled things differently but you can see how we arrived at our conclusions.
We did advise the police that you had paid, it was their lack of communication that resulted in you being questioned.
We did move you from your studio unit to a one bed-roomed unit with a price differential of $55.00 but only charged you at the studio price, but of course you make no mention of that.

In this business we have to deal with a broad cross-section of the rich tapestry of life that inhabit our planet. It is inevitable that from time to time we come into conflict with each other, mainly through misunderstandings. I can understand why you reacted the way you did but others might laugh it off and dine out on the experience. If you read the comments others have made you will realise that we have many favourable comments, but we are not perfect.

Stayed for two nights on way to Wellington. Liz and Ian were very friendly and helpful in recommending things to see and do in the local area. The room was very clean and of adequate size. The motel was in a very good position for walking to restaurants and town centre although the road on which it is situated is extremely busy with no pedestrian crossings. We were not disturbed by any noise and slept well. Continental breakfast available was good. I felt this was a good motel with lovely hosts and excellent value for money.

Just stayed one night on way to Rotorua. Very clean and tidy. Only needed a studio unit and found the size ideal, not too small for two people. Step out of unit to pool, lovely. Would definitely stay here again. Lake just across the road. Very pleasant.
