“A bathtub with a view”
Reviewed February 8, 2010

We stayed 2 nights at One Burgess Hill in New Plymouth. The property is 4 years old and built on a hill next to a river. We stayed in room #8 with the bathtub next to the window with a view of the river and valley. As I sat in the bathtub the lighting and thunderstorm was breath taking.

This is an outstanding property in charming New Plymouth, New Zealand. Not only did the room have an excellent view of the scenery, it was fully equipped with a kitchen, cooking gear, and a full bathroom with a large shower, etc.

Two brothers and their families own the motel and they had wonderful ideas about what to see in New Plymouth. With the ocean only a few miles away, staying on Burgess Hill completes the experience. This is an excellent motel in a very special location!

Great place to stay just out of town and very quiet. The owners welcome you warmly but are never intrusive. Accommodation first class and sitting on the verandah with a drop of NZ Sav Blanc a wonderful way to enjoy an evening. Would definitely recommend this accommodation to those seeking comfortable luxury.

My husband and I stayed here for three weeks while he carried out locum work in the hospital. We were very impressed with all aspects of this accommodation - the location and views were spectacular, the units were cleaned daily, the facilities were great, there was a lovely bush walk to Burgess Park and Hamish and Andrew were exceptional in the service they provided. We would definitely recommend staying here and hope to return again one day!

We stayed at One Burgess Hill a couple of years ago now, but it's remained in my memory as one of the best places we've used, so now I'm a Trip Advisor member, I wanted to add my review. We had a one bedroom unit, with the bedroom able to fit a portacot into. Stunning views across the river, great modern units - though as other reviewers have noted, best to compare with 'motels' rather than 'luxury lodge' type accommodation. Lovely walk down to and around the river, and we were pretty much totally left alone, which we definitely prefer. I'd absolutely recommend this for a couple of nights.

One Burgess Hill is in a beautiful setting. The decor in the room is very peaceful in greens/browns/creams to complement the fantastic views. Plenty of birdsong. The log fire was definitely a highlight. But it was the little things that let the place down a bit. There were only two small towels (we would expect 4 minimum if there is a bath), and the bathmat was half the size of a normal one. The cleaners had not done a great job in the bathroom. The water pressure in the shower was just terrible. The bedside lamps were not turned on at the wall and the bedside clock wasn't set. We would definitely stay here again but just think they need to move things up a notch to earn the "luxury accommodation" tag.

If you need to stay in New Plymouth this would appear to be the best of the best, we drove past others we had considered and none looked as special nor were in such a good location as One Burgess Hill.
The view is fantastic, overlooking the river and reserve, very quiet other than river noise too. The apartments are modern with a contemporary finish, we stayed in a one bedroom apartment at the end of a row, it was reasonably private from our neighbours, had wonderful sliding doors opening onto a lawn area, a firebox, comfortable couches, small table and small kitchen.
Pros - quiet, really clean, view, decor, fire place, bath, location
Cons - only con is it's 4 star plus by motel standard not exclusive accommodation standard, so no bath robes, only 2 towels, basic kitchen etc, but the view and other aspects meant it didn't matter - we loved it.
Shame on you - we booked on wotif, one bedroom apartment for $170 per night, is advertised on wotif as discounted from $220 per night yet we found out later on the One Burgess Hill website the Rack Rate is $170 per night. Other rooms are also advertised on wotif as if discounted also when not at all! This false advertising left a slightly bitter taste once we found out. We use wotif whenever accommodation doesn't have their own online booking system and have never come across this before.

Rooms were excellent. Clean, roomy with amazing views over the creek below. It is a ten minute drive from the town central so it is worth stocking up any grocery needs before you get there because once you have checked in you will want to stay and relax. our plans for further exploring evaporated once we arrived. Instead we opened some excellent NZ wine and relaxed the afternoon away sitting outside the room and taking in the views..
