If you have wheels, stay here to explore Taranaki and New Plymouth.

The modern, spacious accommodation, well-kept grounds and splendid views are just part of the story. The owners could not be more helpful, the beds and furnishings are quality and - especially in these winter days - the electric heating is efficient and the log fire is terrific. The heated, open air spa pool (Room 15), capacious bathroom and huge shower and a well-equipped kitchen all add up to a great experience.

We didn't use the options for food to be delivered, but it all looked very well organised and the choices were tempting.

Broadband is available via a cable; a very tiny gripe - there is no WiFi. The flexibility of WiFi would be much better than a plug-in and would be more in keeping with the excellence of the overall offer.

Room Tip: Room 15 (King Suite) has a spacious private deck and its own spa pool. Peaceful location with great views.

Stayed for long weekend and loved it. Had 2 units overlooking river. Lots of birdlife. Very comfortable. Great shower and spa bath. Woodburner as well as heaters. Cooking facilities limited to stovetop and microwave but we hadn't planned to cook anyway. Nice place to just relax. Good value. You need transport as 5km from CBD.

Room Tip: Ask for river view

We stayed here after reading reviews on Trip Advisor, and weren't disappointed! The rural setting isn't far from town but could be a million miles away, with the motel on the hill and the river roaring away in the ravine below. The rooms are spacious, quiet and well-appointed, the beds comfortable. This place is a bit different from your run-of-the-mill motel, and well worth a stay.

Escaped to New Plymouth for a weekend of exploring and relaxing and couldn't have picked a better place to base ourselves than One Burgess Hill. Located a short drive from New Plymouth's town centre but completely isolated with nothing to spoil the gorgeous views from the rooms. The rooms all seem to be well located with a good distance between each grouping.

We stayed in a King Studio and really took advantage of the veranda that looks out over the olive grove and the river. We had breakfast outside in the sun every morning. The room was a really good size, comes with cooking facilities (and the cutest self cooked breakfast menu), and a huge bathroom. The massive bath was great.

Right from the moment we arrived until our check out the staff were lovely. They gave us directions, maps and advise for sightseeing. Our room was serviced daily and free newspapers supplied. I felt like we couldn't have asked for more.

I did find it was odd that the room didn't have free wifi and a more modern tv, however as it wasn't that kind of a stay, we really didn't mind.

Overall I loved One Burgess Hill. Private, with a relaxing atmosphere and great service. Bliss!

Stayed here for 2 nights in March. We had an elite studio with a gorgeous bathtub in the bedroom, perfectly positioned in front of the window overlooking the river. The whole complex looks brand new and has been well designed with lots of space between the various accommodation blocks. It was a short drive from town but felt very rural due to the gardens and the river views. The unit was very modern, spotlessly clean with a well equipped kitchen area and a nice bathroom with shower as well as the tub in the room. Great value, one of the best motels we have ever stayed in, if only all NZ motels were as nice! Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Elite studios have a freestanding tub in front of the window overlooking the river
