“Nice place, shame about the introduction”

The hostel itself is lovely. The kitchen is huge and the room was very pleasant. However, the initial greeting we received wasn't a friendly one. Check-in wasn't til 4pm so we wanted to store our luggage. There was a number on the door to text so naturally we did. When the owner arrived, she didn't attempt to hide her displeasure at us disturbing her chat with her friend. The tour she gave us when we checked in later was quite half-hearted and her tone was a little patronising when she was explaining things. We wouldn't stay here again based on that but reading the other reviews, everyone seems to have been happy with the service. Perhaps she just has an aversion to younger travellers.

The Seaspray is a beautiful quiet gem with spacious rooms, big bathrooms & good power showers, all spotless clean. I stayed there after 6 weeks of hostel experiences and rated it as one of the best. My room even had an armchair next to a wardrobe - both rather unusual for hostel rooms.

The managers were great, always helpful and friendly.

The kitchen was well equipped and free parking spots were offered behind the house. The only smaller downsides were no free Internet and that the laundry was quite expensive (no dryer). It seemed to be quite a walk from the city center without a car.

All in all I would have loved to stay longer.

This backpackers was one of the best places that I have stayed in New Zealand. The staff are friendly and helpful, the rooms are clean and large and the house itself is beautifully decorated and feels like a real home. Kitchen facilities are excellent. It's in a really nice location only minutes from the coastal walk and from the town centre. I'd only ask for a bit of a nicer outside space to sit when the weather is fine!

The owner Janine has put her heart and soul into creating a friendly, welcoming and immaculate environment for her guests. We were shown to a beautiful spacious bedroom upstairs with comfortable, warm bed, wooden floors, interesting art work on the walls and efficient heating if needed. Next to our room was a fabulous huge toilet and shower. We were offered slippers on entry which was a great idea rather than having guests clomping on the wooden floors. We love the option of self catering or eating out. The kitchen was well equipped and opened into the living area which enabled us to readily meet other interesting guests from all over the world.
We so much prefer this style of travel to an impersonal hotel room and Seaspray was a real pleasure as a place to stay with a personal touch and very close to the beach as well..

Our initial impressions were distinctly unfavourable; we had been told over the phone that the price for a double room was $70 per night. However, when we arrived, the receptionist told us that the cost was actually $78, and he implied that we must have got the prices wrong, as it had not been updated on the website. To make matters worse, the receptionist then told us that we could not gain access to our room, until we had walked back to town to get some more money! (We had only arrived with the $70 we thought we needed).
Once we had returned to Seaspray House with the correct funds, we were shown to our room, which, instead of the double we had been told we had booked, we actually had a twin room. However, this was not a major inconvenience.
We only stayed the one night, but the initial service was so terrible, we felt it warranted a review. This was a shame, as it could be a very nice place.

I would agree with most of the comments about Seaspray House. It is 15 minuteswalk along the lovely coastal path into town. It's a quiet location. It's clean and fresh decor. We had room 6 and it did have a mattress that slumped in and no bedside light (plugpoints at the other side of the room).
The guy who was temporarily running it wasn't very welcoming. He was incredibly military in his recitation of the rules of the place which put everyone who entered on the back foot. I also felt that he wanted the place to himself, he got the hoover out in the livingroom at 10:00am, just as I was finishing breakfast. A very helpful lady was around reception on our last day ( I presume this is Janine).
Loved the challenging jigsaws laid out on the livingroom table.

Room Tip: Rooms 5 and 7seemed to be bigger.

This little place is a short walk from toen with really nice rooms and is peaceful and quiet - away from the rush of the backpackers in town. Friendly staff, helpful with local area and very nice clean facilities with a huge kitchen and sitting area - thoroughly recommend - even close to a walk all the way along the New Plymouth water front.
