a must stop when in NP for a free little zoo, or take friends for a picnic lunch well run and set out,

FREE.... but it would be nice if more people put some coins in the donation box, well worth it, to keep it as good as it is

The zoo is a long way from being one of the largest zoos I've ever visited, but is beautifully kept, the animals and birds are well kept and appear happy, the surroundings are very, very pleasant with a good children's play area and a good supply of picnic tables.
The staff are very friendly and approachable and the whole atmosphere is lovely.
Add to that the fact that it is within the boundary of Brooklands Park, and you have all the makings of a great family day out, because the park is beautiful and surprisingly large for a town-centre park.
It's a credit to the local council but most of all to the people who obviously work hard keeping it pristine.
If you are in New Zealand on the North Island then New Plymouth is well worth a visit and the park and zoo should be high on your list of things to do - especially as it's all free !!!!

Brooklands Zoo is at the end of Brooklands Park Drive and is part of Pukekura Park. It is a small but perfectly formed zoo with a large range of local and exotic animals in good-quality enclosures that have been designed for children to get close up to the animals. It is easy for children and adults to spend more time here than expected!
During the school holidays the zoo holds Meet the Keeper talks once or twice a day, where the keeper talks about where a particular animal comes from and how it is cared for at the zoo. And if you're in Pukekura Park early enough, you might come across the alpacas being taken for a walk!
Bring a picnic as there is heaps of space in the central lawn for families to have lunch while the kids are in the zoo's big playground.
There is limited parking directly outside the zoo gates, otherwise cars can be parked on Brooklands Road.

Having not been here before, I was a little skeptical as to how good a 'free zoo' could be. I was very pleasantly surprised & impressed!

There are not a lot of animals like you would expect at big zoos, but a good selection to keep kids entertained. They range from reptiles, farm animals, birds, meerkats & a number of different breeds of monkeys. The enclosures were very well maintained & had interesting accompanying facts for each animal. We (3 adults) spent about 1.5 hours in total going around all the animals.

There is also a decent sized playground for the kids & even a coffee cart for the adults.

Although this zoo is free, they accept donations - this zoo is very deserving of a donation - here's hoping it can be maintained like this for generations to come!
