“Great hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2012

I have stayed several times at The Waterfront on business, usually for 4 weeks at a time. I have no complaints whatsoever regarding the hotel. I normally take dinner in the hotel restaurant and with the exception of just one meal, I have always found the food to be of the highest standard and taste. The one meal I referred to was simply not to my liking and therefore not meant as a criticism. I have never taken breakfast during my stays so can not comment.
Internet is available free within the hotel, limited to 1hr or 30mb on a daily basis which is suitable for catching mails or networking; other pay plans are available.
Rooms are very roomy, well laid out and with very comfortable beds. I would suggest a larger set of clothes drawers but that is my only critique. Location is superb with easy access via car or on foot.
Staff are the hotel's greatest asset and are extremely friendly, knowledgeable and obviously enjoy working at the Waterfront.
I recommend the hotel unreservedly and look forward to my next stay.

Room Tip: Rooms away from elevators are always best.

This is a very pricey place to stay by local standards so we were shocked to find that the buffet breakfast (included in the price) was so basic. Many Kiwis would have much better at home than here - plain supermarket white bread, cheap jam and weetbix etc. Staff in the restaurant were very pleasant but had little idea of how to run the service effectively, and keep on top of table clearing, refilling the hot water for the make-it-yourself drinks, and taking orders and delivering meals for paying breakfasters. Rooms were very nice and location is great for inner city attractions. Some noise from trucks and trains esp weekdays as this is on the main road to the port, and night-time revellers over the weekend. Room (facing Puke Ariki) tends to get very warm in the day and we realised that it was necessary to run the cooling on the heat pump in the room for quite a while before going to bed, otherwise it was way too hot to sleep (even though only 12-16 degrees celsius outside).

Thank you for writing a review following your stay with us. I will pass your comments in regards to the service and quality in Salt Restaurant onto our Head Chef and Restaurant Manager. Apologies that you experienced some noise during your stay, as an inner city hotel there is sometimes a small amount of noise with traffic heading to the port and passers-by during the weekends. The hotel is insulated very well which keeps it nice and warm throughout the year, all rooms are fitted with individual air conditioning units allowing guests to keep the room at a temperature they are comfortable with. We hope to have you stay with us again.

We have stayed at this hotel for a couple of days. The bedroom is large, bed comfortable and so are the pillows. Staff are helpful engaging with customers.

We found the itemised breakfast delivered to our room on the expensive and basic. It's the sort of breakfast most USA motels/hotels will provide as complimentary.

The hotel provides 1hour of capped wifi free of charge. Having just come back from travelling in five US states where all but one hotel provided free wifi we have realised that New Zealand is so far behind the USA. We found that almost every cafe, restaurant, pub and motel had free wifi. When will New Zealand catch up?

Room Tip: Book early and ask for a sea view

Many thanks for your review and lovely comments about the comfort of your room and the helpfulness of our staff. I am sorry to hear that you found the room service breakfast to be basic, the Restaurant breakfast menu is also available via room service, however this is only available from 6.30am until 3pm. The Waterfront Hotel currently use a third party internet company who provide all our internet plans, we too are looking forward to a time when New Zealand catches up with the rest of the world.

We had a wonderful 2 days at this hotel - the rooms are a good size, the bed was huge & comfortable, and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The only downside was the noise, both from the interior hallway and from the street. They definitely need more sound insulation. We were woken several times on both drunken shouting from the street, in particular a very loud & protracted domestic dispute. Much as we loved the hotel, we wouldn't stay there again for this reason.

Room Tip: Ask for a quite one!

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I am glad you found your room comfortable and the staff extremely friendly. Apologies that you were disrupted by the noise. We would love for you to stay again, I would recommend booking a Superior Studio as they are located on level two and three and are on the Puke Ariki side of the building (not the road side) which may eliminate some of the street noise.

We have visited New Plymouth 6 times over the last 4 months and have been trying out different hotels to stay. None of them even come close to this lovely hotel in respect of the accommodation. The rooms are lovely, clean comfortable and modern. The reception staff and cleaning staff are very polite and professional. The only let down was the restaurant. We booked a table earlier in the day as advised by reception and asked for a table outside. When we arrived the waitress in charge said there werent any available and seated us inside, right at the end of the restaurant. With amazement we then watched her seat a group of people outside who hadnt booked. This was very disappointing. Service was slow and it took a long time for the empty plates to be cleared. Maybe they were short staffed? We were hesitant about going for breakfast in the morning but it came with the package. The food arrived and looked absolutely wonderful until I cut into my eggs and found a long piece of hair in my food. I was so disappointed. To the credit of the waitress she did ask if I would like a full replacement but I requested a refund which she did without hesitation. Great location right in the main centre next to Puke Ariki museum and the TART gallery which features works by local artists. Beautiful 'Tasman Sea' walkway directly across the road. We will definitely stay here again but will not be eating at the restaurant.

Room Tip: I checked last minute websites for the best rate but ended up booking a better rate on the hotel web...

Thank you for taking the time to write a review following your stay with us. I am extremely sorry about the hair that was found in your breakfast, I can assure you this is not a regular occurrence at Salt Restaurant and our Chef sends his sincere apologies. I would also like to apologise for the confusion with your dinner reservation it looks like there has been a miss-communication between our team. We are very grateful for your lovely comments about the rest of the hotel and the friendliness of our staff. We hope to have you stay with us again next time you are in New Plymouth. As the name implies, it is a water front hotel. Reception and room service staffs are friendly. Room size is comfortable. One hour Internet is free, with a data size limitation. Beware that the connectiowimpy be losed once the limitation is reached, without warning.

Thank you for your feedback. It is always nice to hear that our staff are friendly and welcoming. While using your one hour free code you are able to keep the login page open, this then tells you how much time and how many megabytes you have remaining- you can continue to check this until your time or megabytes run out. We hope you will choose to stay with us again during your next visit to New Plymouth.
