Owner description: Pukekura Park covers 52ha (128 acres) right in the heart of New Plymouth, Taranaki and is one of New Zealand's premier botanical gardens. The park has an international Green Flag award and is a Garden of National Significance. With a diverse range of landscapes, the park features bush walks, formal gardens, lakes, children's play areas, a sports area and a Tea House. The park includes the Fernery and Display Houses as well as the adjacent garden estate area of Brooklands, home to the acclaimed TSB Bowl of Brooklands and Brooklands Zoo. As a popular destination for locals and visitors alike, Pukekura Park lights up over the summer as the backdrop for the annual TSB Bank Festival of Lights. The park is free to enter and can be accessed from various streets including Liardet Street, Brooklands Road, Fillis Street, Rogan Street, Kaimata Street and List Street.

Do not miss this Park with so many features. The FERNERY (has opening hours so check them out beforehand) outstanding experience, dry on a wet day too! The Bowl of Brooklands, a natural amphitheatre where major starts have performed, stroll beside the lakes, take a row boat out on the big lake, set the fountain going on the small lake, steer your children to the playground and waterwheel, enjoy refreshment in the café, be surprised by the range of walks, flat and hilly. Feature plants are magnolias and rhododendrons but do not underestimate the native plants throughout.
I live in New Plymouth and visit the park at least once a month; there is always something to enjoy whatever the time of year. IN February do not miss the FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS.

Pukekura Park is stunning in all seasons and the walks are fabulous and well sealed easy going too. Young children are well catered for with a great playground which you will have trouble prizing themselves away from.
Whilst there try the Kiosk overlooking the main lake either for a quick culpa and a sticky bun or substantial dining in a beautiful setting.

Best through autumn, spring and summer but not to be discounted through winter either. Make sure you also visit the Indoor Fernery within the Park, walk right up to the TSB Bowl of Brooklands, a natural ampitheatre with some seating and mostly on the grass as it sweeps slightly uphill. Excellent for viewing concerts and this is where WOMAD (World of Music and Dance) takes place each March, it is NOT to be missed! Also at top of the Park is Brooklands Zoo with monkeys, birds, otters and small farm animals.
Visiting the Park is a MUST DO.

Pukekura park is one of my favourite places. Stop at the Kiosk and grab a coffee - or - on a hot day an icecream, walk the trails; you'll see a huge operating waterwheel, come across Begonia house through a moss covered tunnel, There's the famous cricket area where cricketers and movies are made. The pavilion has toastmasters groups, the lake has ducks and fountains, the park has playgrounds and zoo. Wonderful plant life, bird life and people of all shapes and sizes. On summer evenings there's the famous light display and activites - music, movement and movies. My heart swells with love and pride for a place to all come together that costs nothing but gives much!

Pukekura Park is a beautiful natural park within walking distance of the CBD. We live here and we always take visitors there. The begonia house is high class. The park adjoins Brooklands park which has lovely gardens and stately trees. A place of peace and natural beauty. It is suitable for all ages. Many families take weekend or evening walks here. The festival of the lights around the christmas period is particularly popular.
