Pukekura Park is in the heart of New Plymouth an easy walk from the CBD. During the summer they run a program called festival of the lights where the park has a lighting display that runs from mid December until February. At the same time there are several bands and other entertainment groups that run each night during the festival unless wet.

Beautiful laid out area in a valley occupied by a lake. Great native trees and an excellent fernery.
If you are visiting over the summer period January to March, there are activities on every night and the trees and walkways are lit up as part of a 'festival of lights' At this time, many families visit at night and the kids enjoy themselves in an extensive play area.
Has an excellent 'cricket' field and the whole complex is close to the centre of the city.

Pukekura park is in the centre of town and easily accessible. Walking thru the park is so relaxing. A small cafe for those that want to stop for coffee. The lighting display thru the summer evenings along with free concerts at night is a must do - my children love visiting at night, watching the entertainment and catching up with friends. A leisurely stroll thru the day leads u to the Bowl of Brooklands, gardens and the zoo. Would definitely put at top of the list to visit.

This park is close to the CBD and is a well managed park, basically it's two parks in one, you have Pukekura and Brooklands zoo. At time of writing the park is having major work to both it childs playground (closed) and to the lakes. This work should be finished by September 2013 in time for Spring.

The park has extensive walkways and is used recreational by many people, joggers, walkers, families, etc. The park also hosts the Festive of Lights once a year, normally over a week or two. This is free and will have various kids & adult activities during the day with local bands playing in the evening. It also hosts the annual WOMAD festival over a 3 day period for which tickets are best purchased in advance but are on the expensive side.

The zoo is free but basic, but still entertaining for children.

The park also has a tearoom & rowing boats for hire (when the lake is open). This is an ideal area to chill out in.
