“Worth visiting”
Reviewed February 12, 2012

When I visited, they were exhibiting Vincent Ward’s work, which might have been a bit creepy to children and some adults. I saw one family coming in and leaving soon after. I guess it depends on what is on. Entry is free, so you can go hava a look and see if you like it yourself.

“Interesting Modern Art”
Reviewed January 4, 2012

A good presentation of works by a well-known artist Len Lye. It's good to see this high standard in a provincial NZ city.

“Excellent, friendly and free! Take the kids, too.”
Reviewed January 2, 2012

What an asset to New Plymouth! The Govett-Brewster Contemporary Art Gallery features wonderful, changing exhibits in a lovely, inviting space in the CBD. We've seen at least half a dozen exhibits during our time in New Plymouth. They have been extremely different but all interesting and thought provoking. There are also interesting lectures, often by the exhibiting artists and/or the friendly and knowledgeable staff ... check their Events Calendar on their website: www.govettbrewster.com.

The gallery will frequently feature the art of several contemporary artists loosely tied together by a theme. The current Vincent Ward multimedia exhibit, "Breath: the fleeting intensity of life", is wonderful. The recent huge Len Lye retrospective was fabulous, especially the films and kinetic sculptures. The Fiona Pardington photos were magnificent and moving. And then there was "The Cell", a psychedelically striped blow-up room, where jump-suit clad visitors jumped around or sat to experience a sense of ... well, whatever. It was tons of fun. That's another thing about the Govett-Brewster ... the gallery always has a variety of exhibits, almost always multidimensional or multimedia, frequently offering art that you can interact with in some way. It's a gallery that engages the whole family. And it's free! Stay as long or as short as you want, but don't miss it.

There is a very nice cafe where you can get a coffee, desert or light meal.

The Govett-Brewster will be the site of the future Len Lye Center. Ground breaking is scheduled for October 2012. Lye is an important New Zealand-born artist whose kinetic sculpture is reflected in that New Plymouth icon, the "Wind Wand", on the Coastal Walkway.

“Len Lye exhibition”
Reviewed November 27, 2011

One of the high points of my NZ visit was this exhibition. You need to take time and wait for the sound sculptures to go through their cycle though. Sit back an relax through the noise!

“Stunning showcase for modern art”
Reviewed August 13, 2011

The Govett Brewster Art Gallery is a perfect architectural backdrop for some very interesting and thought-provoking modern art. The exhibitions when I visited were diverse - an exhibition of works by a significant New Zealand photographer, some video works, paintings, sculpture and installations. The interpretive information provided was of a high standard too. Although it is only a small gallery by international standards, it is well worth visiting. I believe plans are underway to extend it.
