“OK but nothing great”
Reviewed March 4, 2013

Hotel is a bit tired. The room size was fine and a reasonable view but there was no air conditioning in the room. A fan was provided but had to be on full to try and cool the room down - the fan was so noisy even on low. Staff didn't seem to know too much abut the town (which being so small is rather surprising). Couldn't tell us the location of a few relatively common things. They were very polite though.

I stayed four nights at the Plymouth for business. New Plymouth in summer is hot, so it was disappointing to find that the Plymouth doesn't have air conditioning in the rooms. The windows do open, but only 10 cm thanks to the security stays which have been fitted. As a result, the rooms at the Plymouth are stuffy and very warm. There are electric fans in the rooms which do help a bit... but not a lot. The first night there I was in a room directly above the restaurant's air conditioner (ironically), meaning that I had to keep the windows shut to try to reduce the noise. That made for an uncomfortably hot night. The next day Reception was happy to move me to another room and even arranged for Housekeeping to move my luggage for me. Good service.

Rooms are a good size and, although dated, are comfortable. The beds are very good, although the pillow selection (four pillows of identical thickness) was a bit disappointing. Water pressure in the shower is really good. Like the main room the bathroom is showing its age but is otherwise perfectly adequate. Kitchen facilities in the rooms are non-existent except for an electric jug.

Front desk service was very good, with helpful, friendly staff. Unfortunately, housekeeping was a bit hit and miss. When I checked into my room the rubbish bin had not been emptied from the previous occupant. On one day wet towels had been removed but not replaced (a quick visit to the friendly folks at Reception and I was given clean ones), and a beverage from the minibar was not replaced for two days.

The hotel is in a convenient location on the edge of the CBD, within walking distance of shops and the coastal walkway. Free parking in the hotel parking lot. Room service is available from the hotel restaurant and, although the menu lists them as "light" meals, the servings are generous. The lack of air conditioning is a real issue though; it makes this hotel an uncomfortable option at the height of the New Plymouth summer.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms overlooking the restaurant air conditioner.

Very nice hotel, stayed here one night on the 22 Dec. Rooms very spacious and well set out. Swimming pool looked very inviting although a bit cold weather wise. Dining rooms looked nice though we did not eat in the restrurant. Room service was good. Laundry was a plus (self service). However do watch out for the locals. The hotel has one way roads running on either side of the hotel so make sure you know which direction you're headed in (especially our friends from over seas!) The locals take a short cut to get over to the road they want to get too. While we looked strangly at them they returned the favour lol. But don't worry it's not dangerous just something to take note off.
Lovely staff, nice time spent.

We (two adults, one 2-year-old) stayed for four nights and had an enjoyable stay.
The staff are all very friendly and helpful. The reception desk is always staffed with knowledgeable women, who helped us with maps, taxis, shuttles, babysitters amongst other things.
We were in a standard room, and although the decor was a little dated, everything was very pleasant. Extra blankets and pillows were supplied, as was an ironing board, iron, hairdryer, and plenty of towels and facecloths. The soap and shampoo/conditioner were also of a good quality and didn't irritate my sensitive skin.
The beds were extremely comfortable and the sheets and bedding were good quality.
The pool and spa were a hit with our son; the pool is deep although has steps large enough for him to play on safely.
We didn't have dinner at the restaurant but enjoyed the full continental breakfast daily.
The hotels location is perfect. It's right next door to Countdown supermarket and a short walk to Cobb&Co, McDonalds and Burger Fuel.
It's within walking distance of TSB Stadium which was essential for us (alternatively it's a $6 or $7 taxi ride). We were also able to walk into town easily.
Always a bonus for parents, was the self-service washing machine and drier, for $2 each.
My partner also enjoyed the on-site gym.
All in all a great stay, with everything we required, we will be back!

I stay regularly at the Plymouth. A significant number of staff have been with the hotel for a long time. They are always friendly and professional. They also are grateful for feedback as to the quality of their service. I have found most of the rooms to be tidy and comfortable. The food is good altho it might be getting to the time to revisit the menu options. The gym is functional. Plenty of space to park your vehicle.

Bathroom very outdated with stains on walls and rusty screws in attachments.
Hairs in bath from previous guests.
Small and cramped toilet and bath area.
Horrid sliding door with no lock and inadequet ventilation.
Lots of dust behind bedside tables.
Remote on tv didn't work properly.
Dvd wasn't attached correctly.
Prices should be reduced or rooms improved

Room Tip: check it over and if not happy ask to reduce rate or try another hotel. Will go somewhere else next...
