Owner description: Utterly spectacular 11km long walkway along the seafront in New Plymouth, New Zealand. Walk, ride skate or scoot from Bell Block in the north to Port Taranaki to the south taking in the stunning Te Rewa Rewa Bridge, three swimming beaches, a golf club, rolling farm land, rivers and various accessways to residential and shopping areas.

I have been on many coastal walkways but I found this one to be one off the best designs. The designers have realy thought this walkway through for both families and more sport orientated. The length alone is a challenge but also dotted with relaxing park areas. Little mobile coffee bars spring up along the route with deco style chairs placed near the waters edge to take in the ocean view or to catch up with friends. Skate boading, bike riding, jogging also with prams and all on one track wide enough for everyone. It even has a flexible wand with a red light that floats and bends to the winds demand and can be seen for miles at night.

A wide well maintained walkway that goes for about 10km - you can wander small sections or do the lot. Showcases nz at its best - bedside the sea and wanders through small towns or camp grounds. Families out enjoying it or people out exercising. It's GREAT.

Had some nice walks in the evening along the coastal walkway. Good to relax after a long working day on my business trip.

While visiting the Todd Aquatic Centre (at the Western end of the Walkway between the Wand and the port) we noticed that mobility scooters were available free of charge to those who need them.
The reception staff could not have been more helpful in explaining what needed to be done. We subsequently booked by phone and on arrival were able to park in a space reserved for disabled people a short distance from the entrance.
Our elderly relative still holds a car driving licence but failing strength means that she finds it difficult to turn the car steering wheel and haas not dirven for some time. She reallly enjoyed being able to drive herself on the scooter along the coastal path to the port end where we had refreshments in the cafe before returning to the Todd centre,
It is really good to find something that is free, that works well and that gives so much pleasure. Congraulations to New Plymouth Council and their helpful staff, and to TSB bank who have donated the scooters.
(ps I gather that three scooters are also available in Pukekura Park, the main park in New Plymouth)

Walked half of the coastal walk while visiting friends in New Plymouth. A wide well maintained pathway along the coast with good vistas.
