“Clean rooms, great customer service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2010

As a result of working in the Hotel business, I'm pretty tough on my rating. We tried to stay a the hotel next door, but they were full, they recommend we go to Victoria Lodge. The owners are very nice and greeted us warmly. They recommended attractions, gave directions and made our dinner reservations. They know how to give customer service. The rooms were clean, full of furniture...but we managed fine. I think most rooms if not all have a thermal outside bath. Very relaxing. We enjoyed our short stay.

My wife and I decided to escape for a night or two. Victoria Lodge was a great choice. Prue and Alan welcomed us like old friends and offered us recommendations if we were there to explore Rotorua. We stayed in one of their newly decorated studio rooms. Great bed , flatscreen TV and a quiet location. Not to mention the private thermally heated pool. A real haven, so close to shopping and the township that we had the choice to walk or drive the short distance. So a great little escape. We will be back and have been telling our friends.

My wife and I stayed for two nights and although the studio room was well appointed it was way too small, by far the smallest room we encountered on our three weeks in NZ. Car parking was a very tight squeeze to get in or out. While I realise that rooms have to be redecorated at times our room had been recently painted and the strong smell caused us both to have headaches when waking each morning. The location was good with only a short walk to shops and eateries and the owners were friendly and helpful. An outdoor spa was reached by climbing out of the bathroom window but for older folks like ourselves this was not an option we took advantage of. Some form of steps would have helped. The sulpher smell in Rotorua wasn't a problem and a visit to the Thermal Wonderland was well worth it as was a ride up the mountain on the Gondola.

The owners were very welcoming, very helpful with loads of advice, maps etc (even by NZ standards where most people seem friendlier than a friendly thing, they surpassed themselves).
The motel is well located near the centre of town (you can walk to plenty of shops and restaurants, although it was a 25-minute walk before we found a restaurant we liked the look of). The town centre is busy, with lots of traffic, but the motel is a a few hundred yards down a side turning, so it was pretty quiet.
We had a ground floor studio which was very clean and had a small fridge, kettle & microwave in the corner, & a small table and chairs. The rooms are very small but a little dark & cramped though.
The bathroom was pleasant and clean with a small shower and no bath. As others have mentioned, there are thermal spa baths outside the bathroom window. They are private, but in fairness not especially useful. You can only get about a foot of water into them, they are made of concrete so not especially comfortable, and they take about 40 minutes to fill up. I think it's more of a gimmick than anything - certainly not a reason to use this motel.
The sulphur smell is a fact of life in Rotorua so no point in complaining about it (and its not so bad as to be problematic)- but leave a window open at night - we did the opposite to keep the smell out, and it just seems to build up in the room as the night goes on!
Parking is right outside the room, but its very tight so beware if you have a long car as other motel users will have a tight squeeze to get past you in their cars.
A previous poster recommended Waikite Thermal Spa - which thankfully I read before our trip - what a find. Thanks for the top tip - it was one of our favourite days. Its basic (but lets call it 'rustic', with 5 or 6 pools I think, very clean - the pools are emptied every night and refilled every morning, you can see the hot stream that feeds the pools which I got a kick out of, and you have views over fields as far as you can see. Really quite special. Cheap too and next to no people. Note though that it's closer to Taupo than Rotorua, but still only about 30 mins in the car (unless you get lost on the winding roads as we did).
As for Rotorua itself. A big busy town, not especially interesting, but a good centre for seeing other things (thermal parks mainly). Try not to spend too much time in the centre, and do your research on where to head to out of town intead.
We went to Waitomo Caves from here (which are great), but note its a 2.5 - 3 hour drive.

Stayed in a two bedroom family unit at the Victoria Lodge. Owners were extremely friendly and helpful with advice on what to see and do. Rooms were spotless and services daily. Location was excellent - quiet yet an easy walk to supermarkets, shops and restaurants. Good bathroom with spa and small but very functional kitchenette. Only issue in the unit was creaky stairs!!

The Victoria Lodge is well located about ten minutes walk from the centre of Rotorua along the main drag where most of the accommodation is situated. It is a small motel run by very friendly and helpful owners. The room was very pleasant if rather small and squashed and decorated in floral designs. There is a large supermarket and shopping arcade just across the road which is very convenient and there is a fridge in the room. The best bit is the cool hot tub made of stone which is built into the outside wall of the bathroom. It is open to the sky but surrounded by high walls so noone can see it. You have to climb out of the bathroom window into it but it is great to sit there with a glass of wine looking at the stars!! Victoria Lodge is a good value, comfortable option to use a base to see the area. By the way, the Waiteke Valley Pools are brilliant if you've got a car, a fraction of the price of the Polynesian Spa and hardly anybody there. A great place!
