I had no idea what to expect from the Maori village experience but it was really good. A great opportunity to meet some fellow travelers and learn about the Maori culture. Was treated to a display of maori music and singing (lovely choir sounds) and demonstration of their martial arts, culture ( and some unwanted surprise of tattoos in certain places lol!). Followed by dinner cooked in the traditional way. Finished of with a short walk to see glow worms and the clearest pond I had ever seen. The Mitai family are friendly, funny and warm hosts.

Our hotel concierge recommended we attend the Mitai hangi (a wonderful feast and performance) rather than another one in town that is bigger and more well known. I am so glad we went to Mitai Village. From the moment our host picked us up, we started to learn about the Maori history and culture of the area. We were walked into a lovely nighttime forest where a canoe paddled by Maori warriors glided into view. Then we saw the haka, the sacred dance performed by the Maori people, with demonstrations of weapons, dances, songs, and stories, all told with wit and charm. Afterwards, we had an amazing feast, and a walkabout after dinner before departing. Well worth the money (it's not cheap), but seriously, you cannot do this anywhere else in the world. We felt privileged to have been able to be part of it.

We got picked up from our downtown Hotel and made the short trip to the Village.

We were warmly welcomed by the staff and settled in for some nice light hearted fun.

The guide was very friendly, and made all of the guests feel welcome and part of the event. In all there were 14 different nationalities in the crowd and the guide did a fantastic job welcoming them with some short words in their own language - very engaging and a nice touch.

After some background info about the tribe, we went for a walk around the grounds and saw the unearthing of the Hangi feast that was to be prepared for our dinner.

Then there were a few ceremonial presentations that were quite enjoyable. Despite the wet weather, it was simple to stay dry while walking between the various village locations.

The meal was buffet style and was sensational. Plenty for all to have multiple servings if you desired and a terrific sweets section.

We finished with another walk around the grounds before being transported back to our hotels and accommodations.

A really fun night out, that really caters to the tourist market and as a result is very good value for money. The food alone is worth the entry price.

Nice job.

Booked this activity through naked bus activities which we got a discount on (available to everyone not only naked bus customers) so with this discount it was well worth the money, I think I paid $65/$70 where as normal price is $110, exactly the same activity, you get picked up from the i site, and dropped back off there or your hotel/hostel. 5 minute bus ride, into the dining area where theres a little speech where the leader of the tribe gets to know where everyone is from and greets them in each language where people are from which is nice. Then a traditional Maori display with dances, training activities singing etc. Very touristy, an easy going fun night. Wasn't the most authentic cultural experience but was a nice night with plenty of food at the all you can eat buffet style hangi. I have been to both Maori village activities in Rotorua, both are very similar. Not sure if I'd pay $110, but with the discount at $65 good value for money!
