“Overpriced Tourist trap”
Reviewed June 7, 2014 via mobile

When your travelling the world as I was and still am it's important to learn of the cultural heritage. Paying $100 to sit in a marquee and eat a buffet while the MC drools his script, and then as described by other reviewers "herded" into another tent to watch a treaty ceremony.

This was ruined for me by the performers in the background who might aswell have taken their iPhones out and went on Facebook. They had no interest in staying in character and had a bored look on their faces while going through the motions.

If this was free then maybe its ok but we the patrons have paid to see you perform, it was very unprofessional.

The last bit where you trek to see glowworms is a huge gimmick with a few glowworms in a pond at the end.

Overall I left angry and felt scammed.

“Fantastic experience!”
Reviewed June 4, 2014

The friends I was visiting in New Zealand were great enough to buy a Grab one for this Maori experience. What a great introduction into the Maori Culture! We had heard, at another location that you could add a kiwi bird experience for after that Hangi was complete in Rainbow springs. We were easily able to add this!

The evening started out in a tent while waiting for everyone to arrive. Our MC for the evening found us to be a tribe of 10 countries - impressively he was able to say welcome in everyone's language. He was a fantastic MC!

We then got to see the Hangi dinner revealed after cooking in the ground for quite some time. We then wondered over to see the Maori warriors come in via canoe, following that we had a great experience watching the warriors perform. They explained their instruments as well as performed the Hakka dance. We sat in simple plastic chairs (not the best, but survivable) with heaters all around the stage/seating area to keep everyone warm.

We then continued on to eat our hangi dinner. It was - ok. BUT, to have the experience made the subpar food worth it!

Thank you for a great experience!

Just loved this adventure. Picked up in a bus by a beautiful Maori lass. Loved the whole evening, the people involved are just amazing, it was apparent to us that they are a very strong family affair. Loved the concert prior to dinner. Nothing negative at all to say about the evening. Well worth the money.

“Thoroughly enjoyed it!”
Reviewed May 28, 2014 via mobile

My partner and I visited in May and even though it was out of season there was a very good turnout. The evening was brilliant- initially I thought it might be going to be a bit cheesy but in fact the performance was outstanding- the group are more like theatre performance standards and they were informative but also very entertaining!! I particularly liked learning about the meaning of the facial tattoos and the Maori culture in general. The food was absolutely gorgeous and very plentiful - everyone was encouraged to have seconds and thirds (if you could fit it in!! ) We struggled to hear the guide in the forest a little bit but all in all this was excellent. We had a grabone voucher which meant it was also superb value for money. It is possibly a little bit pricey otherwise but on balance I would still have been happy if I'd paid full price. Definitely recommended.

“One of the best authentic shows available”
Reviewed May 28, 2014

Having lived in Rotorua for 35 years I can honestly say that the Mitai Village delivers a very realistic show of Maori culture and food.
It was a well run, entertaining and professional presentation that wasn't too drawn out or artificial and one that I would highly recommend to any Rotorua visitor.
