“Home from home with better views”
Reviewed January 28, 2010

A very friendly and welcoming home stay, with the best of hosts. Katherine and Steve made our short stay a real pleasure. A wealth of good advice and assistance with bookings is freely given and proved to be good.
The rooms are spotless and very comfortable with garden and lake views. The distance from the town is an advantage as it is so peaceful and a 15 minute drive to the centre is small price to pay for the setting.
Katherines breakfasts are something special, (not good for my waistline) .
We are planing a return to New Zealand and hope to return for a longer stay at Springwaters Lodge. Thank you steve and Katherine

If you don't mind feeling like a guest in someone else's home, this is not a bad option. If that weirds you out at all, I'd suggest some other places in the area. The hosts were great, however, and coordinated some of our activities while we stayed with them. They even offered me beer from their fridge, which scores them extra points (it doesn't take much for me). The location was a little out of the way, but we had a rental car so it was not a problem.

We stayed at Springwaters for three nights, which was the longest of our stays in NZ, and we were very pleased with the stay. The rooms and common areas at Springwaters were all wonderful, quite new, and very well kept-up. Katherine was very helpful with itinerary suggestions before the trip and helped us book our hangi experience. At the time that we stayed, there had actually been a family emergency in Steve and Katherine's family, but they still ensured that we were well taken care of and had a high level of service. Steve was a wonderful host, and we had great conversations with him about the area and his work at the Agrodome.

There are pluses and minuses to the location of Springwaters. It's about a twenty minute drive from Rotorua on the other side of the lake - if you're looking for a quick bite for dinner and don't want to venture out, there's not a whole lot around, although in the big scheme of things, twenty minutes isn't that far. On the plus side, because it is a bit farther out, there was no sulphur smell, and it feels much more peaceful, and less commercial than Rotorua proper. It's quite close to the Agrodome, Kiwi Experience, etc.

We booked our stay at the Springwaters Lodge thru our travel agent in Singapore. The Lodge is extremely Beautiful and Huge. We had a Beautiful Room with a personal bathroom, and with the view of Lake Rotorua. Our room was just next to the Jacuzzi ( but never got to use as it was raining :( ). Host Kat & Steve and thier kids were extremely amazing, they were so accomadating & lovely people. It really makes us feel at home. Never made arrangement for other meals but had the best Muffin ever, YES!!Host Kat makes the best Muffin. Yummy!!

Springwaters Lodge is a beautiful, spacious home, with a warm family atmosphere. You are immediately welcomed and invited to socialize, or enjoy the privacy of your modern and comfortable room. It is tastefully decorated, very clean and with all the appliances you may require. Only a short drive to Rotorua town, and two minute walk from the lake. We would highly recommend a visit. Thank you so much.

We spent six nights at Katherine and Steve's home stay bed and breakfast in Hamurana, Rotorua. The owners and the lodge was very welcoming, made you feel at home straight away. Our room was beautiful and had an en suite bathroom. Dressing gowns and slippers were provided along with towels and all you needed, and the views from it were fantastic. You could see Rotorua across the lake and thermal activity in the distance. In the hallway there is a facility to make your own tea or coffee with a fridge full of cold drinks etc, and always some cookies or cakes if you felt peckish. Katherine is a lovely cook and will cook you anything you fancy for breakfast, we had bacon butties most days. She will also cook you dinner as well as long as you tell her in advance. In the hall there's loads of leaflets so you can plan your days and Katherine and Steve have plenty of local knowledge. The lodge is in Hamurana, right next to the lake, with some nice walks and a golf course just up the road. About twenty minutes from Rotorua and all the attractions and some beautiful countryside when driving to the lakes and the coast.
Altogether we had a fantastic experience staying with Katherine and Steve and their children and can't wait until we can visit New Zealand again.

Relax in modern and stylish surroundings with friendly hosts who will cater to your needs. Katherine and Steve are 'locals' having lived in the area over 25 years and are both born and bred New Zealanders. Both have worked in tourism/hospitality for several years. Steve is a true local, having grown up on a farm near by.Each of the rooms has a private en suite bathroom with walk in shower, toilet and vanity, tv and dvd player, luxury linens, robes and slippers, safe and luggage rack and a most importantly a comfortable super king sized bed.Home baking and refreshments are available self serve 24/7. There is a indoor and outdoor seating area near by the guest rooms. Katherine loves to bake so there is always something delicious to nibble on.You are welcome to bring a light meal or take aways home. There are plates, glasses, cutlery in which you are welcome to use. Otherwise, Katherine is happy to prepare you a delicious meal. This may be as simple as a sandwich or a full three course dinner - Beef barbecued steak to Japanese Curry - just let her know what you would like. Prior dinner reservations are helpful otherwise you will have a limited choice. Situated across the road from Lake Rotorua you are provided with views of the lake and Mokoia Island. In the back ground - the hills of Mt Tarawera and the city lights.Walk 500m the the famous Redwood forest and Hamurana Springs track. Both are amazing. The forest is make up of large Sequoia trees and a beautiful clear stream flowing from the spring out into the lake. Several types of birds and ducks live in this area as do of course our famous trout. You cannot buy trout in NZ - you must catch your own!Lake Rotorua is famous for trout fishing, but in our area also famous for having hundreds of 'black swans'. A 'country' 9 hole golf course is located alongside the springs walk - we have golf clubs available for those wanting to play a round.Family groups are welcome at the home of Katherine and Steve. They have two senior school aged children. There are games and books to entertain and a big front lawn to run about on. Only well behaved children can be accepted - children that will not disturb other guests in the night - otherwise a full house booking (all four rooms) is available. ... more   less
