“The place to stay in Rotorua!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 11, 2012 via mobile

Serendipity B&B offers the best stay I had in Rotorua. Lovely couple Brian & Kate made a great host helping us with their on-point recommendations to places to visit while I was there and made me feel at home at their homestay with superb backyard view overlooking Rotorua since their place is situated high up.

Their home-made breakfast was a great start to anyone's day and one should definitely try Brian's home-made bread which he served over breakfast.

Though my visit was a short one, it was one of the best holiday trip to date in which Serendipity B&B completes it all!

Wonderful homestay! Brian and Kate are fabulous hosts. Their home is very comfortable and the views are outstanding. They suggested, arranged, and even booked several outings for us during our stay, and even accompanied us to the hot springs pools outside of town and out to dinner one night. Such wonderful hospitality. We will be sure to book with them again when we come back to New Zealand. Thank you Kate and Brian!

We were there April last year(unable to select this for the date of stay column). When we arrived in Serendipity Homestay, our hosts immediately handed us a pair of binoculars and ushered us to the deck to watch the geyser that had just gone up.’ Wow!’ We exclaimed the moment we stepped on the deck. The view was magnificent. Serendipity was at the top of a hill in Tihiotonga, about 4km south of Rotorua. In the front slope of the house was a farm where sheep came close to the fence to play. Further down was the Tihiotonga Centennial Park which was full of trees with blazing autumn colours. Beyond were the Rotorua town and the lake, and in the middle of the lake the Mokoia Island. We could see miles and miles away across the lake to the north shore. To our right we could see geysers going up in Whakarewarewa. The most prominent one of cause was the Pohutu. With the binoculars we were looking at people looking at the geyser, interesting. To our left we could see Mount Ngongotaha quite clearly. Brian and Kate eagerly pointed out famous landmarks in the town like St. Faith’s Anglican Church, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Rotorua Museum of Art and History and so on.

Kate made some coffee and tea and the four of us sat comfortably on the deck, surrounded by their lovely garden; taking in the great view while having a nice chat. Both of them were very nice and hospitable, making us felt very much at home, as if we were visiting our own uncle and aunt. They knew Rotorua inside out, loved to travel and had tried almost everything themselves (except the bungy jump), so they have lots of first- hand experience and interesting stories to share with guests. They helped us to plan our day in Rotorua. Knowing that we were going to have a busy day ahead, Kate offered a hand to help us with the laundry. We were glad that we came here early in the day to let them help us out in planning the itinerary. We later realized that the morning in Serendipity was in fact the most unforgettable experience in Rotorua.

Kate loved handcrafts and needleworks, she decorated the house with her own beautiful embroideries and many other cute little things. Even the bathroom was tastefully decorated too. Going to bathroom became a pleasure. Each time they only receive one party, so we have the luxurious separate bathroom all to ourselves. They must have the highest water pressure in town, they had to put up notes on the glass door of the shower cubicle to warn guests. There was an old spa bath that was nice to look at. We were given the privilege of chosing the room on arrival. We chose the View Room, which was smaller but has great view of Rotorua looking through the sunroom. Lying in bed we could see the wonderful night view of Rotorua. In the morning, from my bed I could see that some sheep had come up close to the fence to spend the night. It’s wonderful to see them so near to us.

Kate set up a table beautifully for breakfast in the dining room with gorgeous view. Kate let us taste the Anzac biscuits she made for her grandson and told us the story behind the biscuits. She was very kind to send us the recipes of this biscuit for us to try at home. She also help us to book hangi at Mitai and Riverjet Thermal Safari at Tutukau Gorge. We regret of staying just one night and not having a chance to taste Kate's home cook dinner( I rather not going to Mitai if I ever have the chance to choose again). Hope to return again!

Great hospitality from the host and hostess and a comfortable spot overlooking the steaming fumeroles of Rotorua. A beautifully quiet spot with stunning views. Plenty of helpful advice and local recommendations to follow. Rooms comfortable but would benefit from being bigger.

Thank you for your valid comments.
Oh yes, we totally agree that the double room could be bigger! When we did the alterations to the house, it was impossible to enlarge the double room but we happily extended the twin room. As we only ever take two guests at a time, we emphasise that they have access to both rooms, either for sleeping or storing extra bags. It seems to work just fine. We are very grateful for our guests positive comments.

Situated on a hill overlooking the Rotorua thermal area, town and lake which are all only a short distance away, Serendipity is a modern, comfortable single storey residence with a beautiful garden maintained by the sociable hosts, Brian & Kate. Two good sized rooms with great views are offered as accommodation, but only one party is accepted at one time. So, as we were, you can be sure of their undivided but unobtrusive attention during your stay. Breakfast is a treat, customised to your own preference. These are well travelled hosts who are more than happy to share their knowledge and if necessary, make suggestions for an enjoyable stay. The perfect hosts!

We spent the month of March 2009 traveling the North and South Islands of New Zealand. All our accomodations were B&B's and this B&B stands out as one of our fondest memories. Brian and Kate, the owners, made us feel like we were family members who happened to drop in for a couple days. Whether it was sitting out on the deck admiring the spectacular view of the thermal springs or sitting around the breakfast table we were always impressed with the wealth of knowledge Brian and Kate had to share with us. The breakfasts were always great (everything was homemade)!
The only thing that was disappointing was having to leave. We wish we would have stayed a couple more days as there is so much to see in and around Rotorua. Brian and Kate made reservations for us well in advance to attend a Maori cultural evening. If we were to return to New Zealand we would definitely stay at Serendipity for a longer time.

The B&B is on a hill overlooking Rotorua town, the geysers and the lake. You can see the geysers shooting up from their patio.
The rooms were clean and spacious. We had access to their computer and living rooms. We were greeted with a cup of tea and biscuits.
Brian and Kate are a wealth of information about the local area and the Maori culture.
Their B&B has easy access to the town and airport.
