John is the best host that we met during this trip! We really enjoyed spending two days with such a great hospitality, warmly welcome (and even a great bye and bye!).When do we go back? For sure, soon or later!
Kids miss the dog "Loki"... a good experience for our daughter!
PS: Many things to do in Rotorua (again, ask John! he really knows where to go). Cheers from the French Family from HK.

Its difficult to know what to write here as everyone says much the same thing, and exactly what I would say.

The house is beautiful - a real period gem: everything you need is there, and John is - and I guarantee this - the best, most helpful and friendly host you will ever fine in a BnB. Loci the dog is also lovely. He's a sort of white fluffy husky but really cuddly and reminded me of my cat (I know another one of these dogs in a hotel in Wales who is just the same. They are a lovely breed - I wish I could remember the name).

We were only in Rotorua for a short time - it was really just somewhere to stay before flying South and I didn't have any particular expectations. However, with John's excellent recommendations for food and sightseeing we had a great 20 or so hours in this vibrant and attractive city. Rotorua is one place I would definitely visit again if in new Zealand. And I wouldn't look round for accommodation - it would be Robertson house.

Robertson House was the highlight of our stay in New Zealand as the period property is full of character and has been beautifully restored by John. Ask him about the ghost :-). Rooms are large, clean and comfortable and tea, coffee, biscuits & cakes are available from the kitchen at any time. John (and Loki the dog) is an excellent host and will help & advise with what to see & do in and around Rotorua. Braekfast is continental, but good selection of fresh fruit, cereal, breads, jams etc. Excellent value for money too compared to other 'boutique' accommodation.

From fresh coffee on arrival (long before a standard hotel check in time) to hugs on goodbye, our time with John at Roberston House was delightful. The beautifully restored old home is located close to central Rotorua (a short 5 minute walk to restaurants, parks and shops), and our room was large, very comfortable, and beautifully appointed. We particularly enjoyed our host, John, and his dog, Loki, who made us feel right at home. When needed John was a quick help in confirming and securing bookings for different activities, and was able to direct us to things to see, do and places to eat. We loved our stop in Rotorua, and were especially glad that the sulphury geothermal smell isn't present at Robertson House.

The food was delicious, but do note that it is a continental style breakfast - which was perfect for us. We enjoyed fresh croissants, jam, fruit, yogurt and cereal with juice and coffee. If you are after eggs and bacon I would request it in advance, or choose another B&B.

Highly recommended!

My husband and I booked our stay at Robertson House in late July as part of a 6 month extended honeymoon. Robertson House is a beautiful heritage listed home in Rotorua (great location to town) that John, the owner, has painstakingly restored to it´s original glory.

John made us feel at home straight away and as it was our honeymoon, offered us the pick of his beautiful rooms! The room decor, home facilities and amenities were fantastic, and John was more than helpful in recommending the best places to eat and activities to do in town. He was also extremely flexible with the dates of our stay as due to the terrible storms that hit the coast of NZ at that time, we had to (happily) extend our vacation.

For those who are looking for accommodation with character and a great host, all on a budget, we would recommend Robertson House in a heartbeat and would happily stay there again.

We booked at Robertson House on the spur of the moment (very unusual for us) and because it was off-season, had no problem getting a gorgeous room. John, the proprietor, was extremely friendly and helpful and gave us superb information about the area. He was energetic without being obtrusive, a difficult and rare balance in B&B owners. The house is an historical gem, beautifully restored, and graced by tasteful decoration and a lovely yard with luscious citrus trees. Our room was spotlessly clean with a huge bathroom that offered a separate bath and shower (although we spent so much time in the Polynesian Spa in town, we didn't need another bath!). The breakfast room is super comfortable and bright. There's free internet access. It's an easy walk into town. We stay in B&Bs all over the world, and this one will remain fondly in our memories for years to come. Highly recommended!

The house is drop-dead gorgeous - a beautifully restored, intricately decorated old house that used to accompany a stable. High ceilings. Grapefruit tree in the backyard. The room we stayed in was spacious, and other rooms appeared to be, too. The rate was a bargain. The hotel is about a ten- or fifteen-minute walk from downtown Rotorua, i.e., just far enough away to avoid Rotorua's tourist trappings. A laptop with wireless internet access is available (a boon to international travelers who haven't bought a transformer and adapter for their own laptop). But the main selling point is John, the host, whose friendliness, enthusiasm, helpfulness, and wise suggestions made our stay. John's dog Loki was also a great host and exceptionally well behaved.
